Autumn Essentials (Prepare to Part With Your Cash)

Ok, it’s gotten cold. I’m sure the trees are looking distinctly more brown than green and the heating has automatically come on. That’s more than enough proof for me. This can only mean one thing- a complete wardrobe overhaul! The summer playsuits, hot pants and maxi dresses are neatly folded into a box under the bed for hibernation and outcome the big knits, chunky tights and the faux fur. Yes!

I’ve always been a winter girl at heart. There’s something infinitely more fashionable about AW fashion for me.  I love to layer, I really do. And this is a primetime seasonal activity for me. I also have a small obsession with winter boots which I have inherited off my mother and my knitwear collection has steadily grown to the point where a trip to IKEA for storage solutions was deemed necessary.

This AW there are a number of trends to take note of – Heritage, Military, Baroque and Goth (see my previous blog post). These looks have filtered down from LFW Feb 12 onto the high street for us to snap up. From these looks you can accumulate great winter looks through statement pieces such as a military jacket, studded heels and knitted shorts. Statement pieces sorted, I’m going to look at autumn accessories; what little details will get you firmly on the style radar this season?

Pretty Collars

Collars aren’t just those things on work and school shirts. They’re absolutely everywhere this AW and can transform an outfit from mundane to fashionable. Whether sparkly, block coloured or frilly, collars can work both ways- they can act as a pretty, girly feature for an outfit or can strike an androgynous look depending on which style of collar you opt for. Alexa Chung, style icon (need it be said) rocked many a collar at AW LFW creating a rather granny-chic look, another trend to look out for and perhaps requires you to raid your Nan’s wardrobe as weird as that sounds…  Victoria Beckham who the fashion world is lapping up after the success of her NFW Show largely bases her fantastic dresses around collars too. And whatever Posh does, we tend to follow suit.

Top accessory points for Victoria- collar, beautiful husband and cute baby!

Cowboy Ankle Boots

I have my pair already courtesy of Zara, the cowboy ankle boot is the best thing to dress your feet in this AW. Practical and of course stylish, opt for a chunky heel and a colour that will go with lots of different outfits. Whether you are wearing them into the office in the daytime or teamed with chunky tights, knitted shorts and a blazer for a catchup with friends in the evening, you are sure to get the standard ‘ooo where did you get those’ comment when wearing these.

A Faux Fur Cape

Using the Heritage trend, if you don’t already have one, it’s time to invest in a faux fur cape. Faux of course, fur is the ultimate winter texture and screams sophisticated fashionisita. Capes are big this AW with all the designers showcasing cape coats at their shows. A little fur cape is the perfect accessory to drape over an evening dress or even a sweater dress and boots for a shopping trip. And you’re going to be doing even more shopping than usual as Christmas approaches!

There’s something in the (designer) water at the moment and anyone who’s anyone is collaborating with a high street brand this AW. JW Anderson for Topshop, Temperley for John Lewis and the upcoming Margiela for H&M are the top ‘collab’s’ this season. And accessories-wise, H&M is not going to let us down either- Anna Della Russo, top editor of Japanese Vogue is lending her expertise for a turquoise and gold infused collection which includes, cuffs, charm belts and even a suitcase. Oozing  traditional luxury and impact with a bold colour scheme, this collection lands in store Oct 5th and let’s face it, will probably sell out in five minutes. Might be wise to pitch your tent outside your local store fairly sharpish.

So there are a few suggestions for starting points this AW. Remember, work these accessories around you own personal style to achieve an original look that will get you looks on the street for all the right reasons. It’s just a shame that the weather has to get so damn cold before we can rediscover our love for AW fashion!
