Fashion in 2012- My Favourite Bits

So December 31st has rolled around once again and today people are looking back on their year with reminiscent sighs, attempting to sum up what they have achieved and what they hope to achieve in 2013. For me, 2012 was the year I became a serial intern! From a local magazine, to a blogger at Graduate Fashion Week, to working for a publishing house and a couple of fashion magazines in the big old city of London, if there was experience to be had, I was doing it! 2012 was also the year I started this blog, and if I can recommend doing anything in 2013, it’s starting your own blog!

So yes, now I’m going to get all reminiscent  and have a little look back at my favourite fashion moments of 2012. What better thing to look back on than fashion?!

Favourite Womenswear Collections of 2012

2012 was the year where fashion went back in time, forward in time and diagonally in time (if that was possible…you get my point). Inspiration was taken from absolutely everywhere. In New York, Donna Karan transported us back to the 1940s with her ‘His Lapel- Her Body’ collection which celebrated the emancipation of women with powerful tailored suits, brogue heels and collars and cuffs aplenty. At Balenciaga, Nicholas Ghesquiere referenced the early 1980s with broad shoulders, cocoon-shaped graphic jumpers and vivid splashes of colour. And Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel shot into the future with a superhero- esque collection with space-galactic wool coats with jewel embellishments, crystalline eyebrows and Lucite shoes with transparent heels.

But for me, my absolute favourite collection must go to Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton’s ‘A Beautiful Future’ show  saw voluminous mushroom shapes, delicate bluebell forms and the soft textures of fur, marabou and organza all combined with futuristic visors and barbell shaped belts in techno silver. The dramatic shapes and beautifully romantic colour palette of this collection was simply awe-inspiring. Check out my full review for the show here:

And concerning SS13, Burberry has to take the rosette for most stunning collection. If only I could get my hands on one of those metallic trenches for 2013, that would be the perfect start to the year!

Favourite Menswear Collections of 2012

For menswear in 2012, it was all about tailoring and pattern. YMC perfectly represented the versatility of menswear these days with a collection which showed old school preppy shirts with jumpers draped over the shoulders, boldly striped blazers and polo shirts alongside a late 80’s casual aesthetic of baggy turned up jeans,  leopard print jackets and slick shades.

Roberto Cavalli hailed a key look of 2012, metallics ,with a collection that took a futuristic take on the 1970’s disco scene. Saying , ‘we should think more about fantasy’, Cavalli’s collection of twilight blues and sleek silvers were tailored to perfection with the signature extravagance of Cavalli to complete the look.

And of course, menswear would not be complete without the barmy yet brilliant John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier who both presented wacky colourful collections, Galliano’s celebrating nature’s wildest patterns and Gaultier fusing middle-eastern influences with nautical.

For me, my favourite collection would have to go to Margiela SS13, with its light, springy colour palette and use of luxurious textures and subtle patterning. Simple yet always effective!

Designer of 2012

This HAS to go to Victoria Beckham. No competition in my eyes! From pop-star to WAG to fashion designer, the transition has not come easily for Posh. If there’s any industry where it’s hard to be accepted, it’s the fashion industry and Victoria’s status as a fashion designer has been earnt accordingly with her collections which always aim to flatter the female form and which will stand the test of time with their sleek  and modern designs. And she’s not short of celebrity fans  either- Eva Longoria, Beyonce, Jessica Ennis, Michelle Williams, J-Lo, Cheryl…the list goes on. You know you’re doing something right when the world’s most beautiful women want to wear your designs. I also love that Victoria is often papped wearing one of her own designs. I think it shows her passion for what she is doing now. I look forward to one day being able to afford one of your dresses Victoria!

Style Icons of 2012

It’s probably the most obvious thing in the world to say, but style these days is so versatile! So I’m going to honour this fact by picking out a few winners here. For her classic timeless style, I’m going to pick Miranda Kerr. Sticking to the formula of less is more, Miranda is winning with her fashion approach that sees timeless neutral pieces in classic cuts combined with a statement piece in a bold colour or pattern.

On the more daring side of the style radar, I could not neglect Katy Perry. With natural beauty and lots of charisma on her side, this lil lady can pull off the more wacky designs without looking like a bit of a mental case. And even though Kristen Stewart disappointed us all with her immoral behaviour this year, I think her red-carpet looks this AW have been very on trend and just that little bit daring. It may have something to do with her working with Balenciaga, I’m not sure….

Fashion Publication of 2012

Keep a look out for SHEER magazine in 2013 kids, it’s going to be big! I had the fortune of writing articles for them earlier in the year (visit www.sheermag.com), and they’ve recently been all over the news with their current cover which features a stunning black and white shot of Tulisa. Bringing you reviews of all the fashion shows (London Collections coming up soon), interviews with the stars and basically anything fashiony, 2012 was the making of Sheer.

My fashion moment of 2012

This would have to be working at Graduate Fashion Week on the official blogging team in June. Having the opportunity to write and do what I love, whilst getting a privileged look at the design talent of tomorrow, attending talks hosted by the best in the industry and sitting front row at the shows… amazing! One of the best ways to get experience is to get stuck in to the industry and this was one of the best places to experience it. And I got to see Henry Holland, Matthew Williamson, Daphne Guinness and many more fashion faces!

So there we have it. I think we can agree that 2012 has been a wonderful year for fashion. We’ve already seen what 2013 is bringing us through the SS13 shows at the September Fashion Weeks, and I for one can’t wait! For me 2013 is the year where I get my dream job and of course, get that Mulberry bag I’ve been wanting for forever! Happy New Year everybody! 🙂

The stress of sale-shopping- what to invest in and what to avoid

Who on earth gets up at 4am on Boxing Day morning to attend the NEXT sale?! Whilst this is most definitely not my idea of fun, for many thousands of people this Boxing Day, that was precisely what was on the ‘to do’ list. Queues aplenty formed all over the country, from Next to up-market department stores Harrods and Selfridges and high street favourite Zara, all full of shoppers hoping to bag a bargain and maybe give a few black eyes to any competitors who tried to get in front of them in the process.

boo for queues!

boo for queues!

There’s no denying it, it’s a good feeling getting a bargain. Even better when you actually end up wearing said item more than once. But from my experience, I do seem to fall into a pattern of buying something just because its been reduced and then not actually ever wearing it more than actually making  a worthwhile investment. So I thought I’d tell you my thoughts on what you should be investing in during the sales this year, and what you should be leaving on the rails for some other crazy shopper to snap up.

In at number 1: jeans

I love to shop for everything. When I say everything, I don’t mean jeans. Even though I wear jeans pretty much every day, shopping for a suitable pair does not excite me. Neither do the prices. So the sale period makes this laborious task slightly better as prices are much lower. A quick scan on the internet shows some promising jean options in H&M (Prices from £3!!), and Zara. This is my top investment choice for sale garments as if you get the right pair you’ll be wearing them long into the year!

Close runner up: an everyday bag

I am still rather smug about picking up an absolute bargain in the form of a brown cord and leather everyday bag from Urban Outfitters a couple of years ago. It’s often the case that when you pick up something for next to nothing, its always the item that gets the most compliments. An everyday bag will set you up for the entire year. Whether for work, university, a day out or just because you love a pretty accessory, this won’t be a money waster! Check out Urban, Mango and Topshop for good reductions on excellent quality bags.

Mango £19.99 from £44.99

Mango £19.99 from £44.99

And last but not least: A good pair of boots

We all love a good pair of shoes. Even better when they’re half the price! Now that AW12 is on its way out and SS13 will be hitting the shop shelves, why not invest in a pair of half price winter boots ready for next year. Black will always be in, and choosing a simple yet stylish design will set you up for the following winter but will not require you to save up for the entire year beforehand!

Zara Cowboy Boots

And what to resist….

The main thing to avoid doing is to buy anything too ‘on trend’ as you’ll soon find that nobody will be wearing it! So this year try to resist buying any more studded pieces. Huge for AW12, the fashion world will be moving on from them into much softer textures and patterns for SS13. And as much as it pains me to say it, leather accents on garments are also a winter trend and won’t fit in with the spring summer vibe soon to hit our shops. Same applies for Aztec print (although that may be wishful thinking on my part).

Good luck sale shopping and let me know your investment finds!

The Beckhams- Fashion’s Favourite Family?

1_BeckhamFamily-540x507 (1)

I never thought the day would come where I would be jealous of a ten year old boy’s career, but that fateful day arrived yesterday when I saw Romeo Beckham’s new Burberry campaign! Modelling alongside Charlie France and Edie Campbell for the ss13 campaign, and shot by none other than Mario Testino,  Romeo poses very professionally, Burberry trench and happy go lucky smile in tow. This got me thinking about how crazy it must be for the Beckham children having Victoria and David Beckham as their parents- two of the most globally recognised fashion icons for both men and women. Are the Beckhams fashion’s favourite family?

Romeo Beckham Burberry Spring 2013

She’s a hailed fashion designer, a 6 times Vogue cover girl and a style icon to millions. Victoria Beckham reeks of fashion! Impressing the fashion world is no easy task but she achieved impressive critiques with her modern minimalistic designs which range from the feminine to the androgynous, always simple and timeless. Her dresses have been seen on absolutely everybody, from Jessica Ennis at the Sports Personality Awards this week, to Miranda Kerr, Cheryl Cole and bestie Eve Longoria. Her dresses aim to flatter the female form and create curves in all the right places- every girl’s dream. And she’s done a photoshoot with Karl Lagerfeld at Coco Chanel’s home- so bloody jealous!

David is on par with his beautiful wife. Alongside his perfume collaboration with Victoria, he has campaigned for Armani and has his own range at H&M where fans were delighted to discover it was underwear he would be modelling! His fashion icon status has advanced from hairstyle trend-setter from his earlier football days to full-blown style icon for men everywhere. His simple yet effective style matches Victoria’s. Think beanies, knitwear and chunky boots for basketball games with the boys and terrifically tailored, stupidly expensive suits for evening events.

And now it seems all this has rubbed off on the Beckham children. Stepping out as a family, they always look impeccably dressed. And baby Harper already seems to have her mother’s pout perfected and a designer wardrobe to make any baby jealous- if babies knew how to be jealous that is…

So I think I can confirm that the Beckhams are most definitely fashion’s favourite family right now! I look forward to seeing many more fashion campaigns from them.

My Ultimate Christmas Wish List

Imagine a world where Santa firstly existed, but also had high fashion awareness and only let you choose your Christmas gifts from VOGUE? I don’t think I would have a problem with this world! After reading my bestie’s blog (search for Jamie Daniel) about his luxury Xmas wish list if money were no object, I got to day-dreaming about what I would ask for if money grew on our Christmas trees…..

1)      A HUGE Mulberry Bag

It’s ok, because I’m SURE I will get one of these in the next….ten years!? But in all seriousness, the Mulberry bag is top of my luxury wish list. Recognisable anywhere because of their stunning designs and that little gold mulberry tree, this is the bag that has been draped over such celebrity arms as Alexa Chung and Kate Moss, and indeed probably every other female celebrity that you can think of. My current favourite is the slate blue ostrich Bayswater design a cinch at £4500. So that will be a little stocking filler then!

2)      A Marchesa Princess dress

Seeing as I’m talking about a world where Santa wears a tailored designer red suit and carries an ‘it’ sack, I may as well throw in a fairtytale princess dress into the mix! Marchesa is the brand behind some of the most elegant, delicate and stunning dresses for AW12. Using the classic luxury materials and colours, this shimmering collection of gowns tick all the ‘princess’ boxes. Slick and tight at the top, billowing and beautiful at the bottom, I would wear one of these dresses down to Tesco if I had one, just to be able to wear it as much as possible. Maybe not…but you get my point. I want one!

3)      Burberry SS13 Cape Jacket

Of course Burberry would have to feature in a luxury Christmas list. The ultimate heritage brand of Britain, Christopher Bailey pulled it out the bag yet again with his SS13 collection which saw metallic trenches in vivid pinks, blues and greens and my new favourite thing- the cape coat. The classic cape, a cape incorporated into a traditional trench and some cute little ones to top off the collection, I fear I may have caused a cape-related burglary if I had been present at the prestigious catwalk event. If Santa really wants to impress me, then he’d better have one of these wrapped up and ready for me!

4)      A Victoria Beckham Dress

Ever since I got my Posh spice doll with her classic LBD and stilettos, I’ve been a fan of Mrs Beckham’s style. Fast forward to 2012 and she’s only gone and got her own hugely successful and highly acclaimed fashion line. Praised for her understated designs which flatter the female form, Victoria’s ss13 collection introduces some more wonderfully-designed creations for 2013. Santa, take note- I have my eye on this nude stretch cotton and satin trim cami fitted dress, but any will do!

5)      A Vogue Editor’s holiday to Bora Bora

And of course, no fashionista’s lifestyle would be complete without a luxury holiday home in paradise! Thrown into this one is a complete set of Louis Vuitton luggage and a hermes passport case.

Many thanks Santa! I’ll leave you out a luxury Waitrose mince pie in return.
