Ashley Madekwe And Her Perfect Wardrobe

I am in awe of Ashley Madekwe. A simple but very true statement! The British actress has shot to fame playing the rather sneaky character of Ashley (convenient) in the hit US show revenge where we  get a glimpse of her natural ability to look beautiful in absolutely anything that she puts on. You may also remember feeling rather envious of her beautiful face and petite frame in ‘Secret Diary of a Call Girl’ where she played ‘Bambi’. Wouldn’t want to end up sat next to her on the tube first thing in the morning lets just say!

In Revenge we see her silently plotting to get her own pretty Chanel shoes through the door of the huge Grayson empire, and whilst doing all this plotting, she makes sure she looks the part, in classy short suits, dainty ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ dresses and some powerful colour clashing outfits.

Pretty in pastel pink.

And in real life too, Ashley is one stylish lady. Lucky enough to be able to pull off a versatile wardrobe of looks, Ashley is kind enough to document her style through her very own blog titled ‘Ring My Bell’. Here we see her looking impossibly amazing in something as simple as a cream cable knit jumper and jeans with statement accessories , to more daring outfits which clash patterns and textures such as leopard print with leather.

How can she look so good in something so simple?!

And it seems that anything goes for where Ashley’s wardrobe is concerned. In the daytime she is a fan of the simple yet stylish approach, choosing skinny jeans, oversized jumpers, muted colour pallettes, all finished off with quirky designer accessories. Theres also a hint of glam grunge in her wardrobe- leather skater skirts, chunky jewellery,  band t-shirts and beanies all feature.

Alongside this simple approach also comes a playful adventurous side. She’s clearly a fan of pattern and texture too. Leather with leopard print, tai-dye with laser-cut, its all there!

Very much similar to another favourite of mine, Miranda Kerr, Ashley is a fan of the simple aside the playful. So to get a wardrobe like Ashley’s just remember the following;

* Invest in timeless pieces- e.g. a leather jacket, chunky cable knit jumpers and  great quality shoes and bags. These things will always look good.

* Clash things! e.g. Ashley likes to use small bursts of leopard print within a classic outfit.

* Dress according to your mood. You don’t have to have just one style. One day Ashley is look like a rock star’s girlfriend, the next she looks like she’s attending an exclusive lunch in the Hamptons. It’s fun to have a versatile wardrobe.

For help, you only need turn to Ashley herself for guidance. With several weekly posts of her outfits, you really have no excuse not to follow in her footsteps!

Spring Trend Alert- Printed Trousers

Busy, garish, eye-catching, high-fashion…this rather versatile collection of words have been used to describe printed trousers. Whilst they’re clearly not for everyone, there’s no denying that printed trousers are well and truly on the fashion scene this spring, and if you want to spice up your wardrobe and be a bit brave, then its time to embrace this trend. Go big or go home as that person once said…

Whether its tribal, geometric or paisley, print is the best way to make a statement. This season puts gecko and floral prints firmly in the limelight, often teamed together.

For a look that will get you looks for all the right reasons, team a pair of printed trousers with a simple white or black top, or a crisp shirt. Completed with a pair of heels to elongate your legs, this is the ultimate look of sophistication alongside a bit of playfulness. For celebrity inspiration check out queens of under-stated fashion, Miranda Kerr and Jessica Alba.

And if you’re feeling rather daring, then team a block colour top or jacket such as a blazer with your printed trousers. Sometimes picking a colour out from the print and using this as your top half colour can make an outfit look amazing!

If a pair of Jonathon Saunders tear-drop trousers or  Moschino Cheap & Chic pineapple print trousers are simply not attainable to you right now (boo), then H&M have some amazing floral prints in spring colours in the sale (I got some for £7!), and Zara are selling some stunning subtle printed patterns.

Wear with confidence and you will soon find compliments coming your way! You may even become a local style icon!

Rainbow Colour Style From The Stars At The Golden Globes 2013

It’s a Monday morning again. And as I sit in my pyjamas viewing the pictures from this year’s Golden Globe Awards, I feel wholly inadequate! This year our favourite women on the planet really did pull out all the stops, looking sensational and just a little bit beautiful in their gowns. Of course there were black dresses aplenty- after all black is timeless, flattering and a fail-safe. There also seemed to be a trending theme of nude fishtail gowns (see Megan Fox and Amy Adams), but what I really enjoyed was the explosion of colour on the red carpet. Here are my favourite rainbow-themed dresses from the night;

One of my top 3 favourite gowns of the night, Claire Danes looks stunning in classic red Versace with voluminous hair and sexy smoky eyes. Shes transformed from her character Carrie in Homeland whose facial expressions should have won their own Golden Globe! And moving into orange, Jessica Alba who is pretty consistent in her flawless style, looks pretty in peach in Oscar De La Renta with the most amazing fluffy clutch and Hollywood locks.

Emily Blunt chose to wear a wonderful golden/yellow floor length embellished Michael Kors gown, slitted at either side of her tiny waist and teamed with luxurious yet slightly unusual ruby and pink earrings. Bet they cost a fortune!

Nicole Richie should know a thing or two about style, what with owning her own fashion label ‘House of Marlow’. Staying true to her style which embraces pattern and colour, she wore a breath-takingly blue creation by designer Naeem Khan. I love the texture of  the gown and the way it falls elegantly around her. Who needs to show skin to be sexy!? And making a lovely transition into the electric blue section of the rainbow, Modern Family star Julie Bowen competes with the big names in fashion in this flattering Halston dress.

To complete our rainbow of Golden Globe stars, Taylor Swift took time out of her busy schedule of writing about ex-boyfriends to attend the event in a rich purple dramatic gown by Donna Karan. I like the fragile spaghetti straps on the dress  which contrast to the huge train at the back.

And I couldn’t fail to mention my favourite dress of the night. Even though it doesn’t fall into the rainbow category, Downton star Michelle Dockery would be awarded the style crown from myself with this amazing gold and white Grecian inspired gown by Alexandre Vauthier Couture. What a lucky girl getting to wear couture AND attend the Golden Globe awards on the same night!

Well done ladies!

Tricky Trend Alert- Black & White

Style Icons- if I asked you to name a few, I’m sure the usual names would crop up- Alexa Chung, Beyonce, Miranda Kerr aka the worlds’ most beautiful women. Now what if I were to throw in Beetlejuice?! I was confused too before discovering the new trend that’s gearing itself up for SS13- black and white stripes.

Who would've thought??

Who would’ve thought??

Now I’ll be the first to admit I’m dubious about this look. I think I’m going to need to convince myself as well as you lot! For me, wearing black and white together runs a high risk of looking like a) a burglar (SWAG bag accessory optional), b) a human newspaper or c) a safari exhibit…that’s a zebra in case you were unsure.  Not too fashion-savvy. But contrary to all this, Marc Jacobs and Moschino were among the designer power houses to use this look in their SS13 shows.

Whether it’s a maxi dress, an evening garment or some rather garish trousers, the celebrities are also embracing the trend. And why wouldn’t they? Exhibitionists at heart, this look will be sure to get them noticed. Gwen Stefani, queen of alternative style shows that black and white can be dressed down for the daytime with a voluminous maxi, whilst serial man-eater Taylor Swift comes over all sweet vs spice with her white and black shift dress.

My tips for perfecting the black and white look without looking like a comedic character are as follows:

1) Avoid horizontally striped black and white trousers unless you have very long and skinny legs- I genuinely think only Cara Delevingne and her fellow model friends could pull these off. I’d love to be proved wrong though!

Cara Delivigne black and white striped trousers. Only for the leggy!

2)Team with boldly coloured accessories ala Kirsten Dunst for a great sixties feel.

3)Vertical stripes are designed to flatter far more than horizontal.

4) Be confident! This look probably isn’t for you if you don’t like being noticed. Remember that confidence always completes an outfit.

So there’s the low-down on this current monochrome fad.  Have my views shifted after this very brief blog post? My answer isn’t black or white but let’s just say I’m prepared to give this look a chance!

Spring Trend Alert- Laser- Cut

So its 2013! Time to have a huge clothes overhaul to make room in your wardrobe for all the next trends for the New Year. If you’re looking to make an impact with a new look this spring, then laser-cut is your new best friend. Subtly sexy, extremely versatile and exciting on the eye, laser-cut was all over the catwalks for SS13, and is now within your reach in all the good high street shops!

At Giles, we saw a sexy black laser-cut dress, revealing in all the right places. At Louis Vuitton we saw a pretty  sheer white dress with a bit of edge with its shaping and laser-cut patterning, and at Balmain we had the laser-cut works with blasts of colour and futuristic designs. And of course the celebrities are getting in on the act. Eva Longoria wowed with a Marchesa design, only for the brave. She pulled it off and looked beautiful obviously! And style icon Nicole Richie payed homage to her subtle yet ever fashion-forward style with a stunning black leather tee.

The key to this look is to not go over-board. Like Nicole, chose one statement piece and team it with something fairly low-key so the laser-cut has its well-deserved moment in the spotlight. I think her top paired with black skinnies looks so fashionable! And if you’re going for a show-stopping dress in the evening like Eva, then team with timeless black heels and a simple up-do.

Looking at what the high-street has to offer, I think you and your purses will be in for a treat! New Look and River Island have some beautiful little laser-cut bags to add that ‘ka-pow’ to an outfit, and Topshop ( always a girls’ best friend where party dresses are concerned) have a number of laser cut designs for you to snap up. And if you’re looking to splash the cash and purchase an investment piece then Whistles should be your destination. They have a stunning leather pencil skirt with laser cut patterning around the hem and a matching top- maybe don’t wear at the same time!
