Its not everyday that you see a fashion turban on your travels. And I’m guessing for most people, there’s not ever been A day ever where they thought, ‘you know what will look good with this outfit? A fashion turban’.
Turbans were once big news in the world of fashion. In the ‘olden’ days of Hollywood, many an actress would wear them as a signifier of sophistication, glamour and luxury. Think silks and satins topped off with plumes of feathers and jewels. And it seems that nowadays, turbans are being used by some of our stars to make an outfit that little bit more eccentric and stand-out.
Take Kourtney Kardashian for example. My favourite Kardashian by FAR in terms of style, she’s worn a dozen different turbans out over the last couple of years and they really complement her brave, experimental and sometimes kooky sense of style. A fan of big patterns and statement pieces, a turban completes a vintage look for Kourtney.
Whatever Beyonce wears quickly turns to gold in the fashion world. This photo from her Tumblr shows her in a natural, relaxed setting, wearing a street-wise outfit consisting of a cropped t shirt, high-waisted denim shorts and a modern-day turban made from a bandana. Of course she looks banging!
Adding Olivia Palermo, Nicole Scherzinger and Cara Delevingne to the list of turban-wearers may also convince you of the wonders of this headwear! Not to mention the several design houses including John Paul Gaultier and Prada who used them in collections.
Personally speaking, I’m not sure I have the confidence to pull off wearing a full-blown turban. I think I would look like a combination of having just got out the shower/ left the hairdressers/ going to a fancy dress party. But if I was to wear a turban-style piece of headwear out, I would probably follow in the footsteps of the Olsen sisters and Eva Mendes by rocking a turban headband. I think they look great in lots of different occasions, whether you want to keep your hair up and out of the way on the beach, or stepping out for drinks in the city with friends.
So we can confirm that a turban is a tricky trend to master, but when done properly, they really do look rather fabulous, and very different! Are you brave enough?
