London Fashion Week- Crazy In Love With Embellishment

Last week it was Paris, this week it was London, now its Milan- oh what a glamorous life the fashion pack live! This week I’ve been relying on the likes of Elle editor Lorraine Candy, IT girl Alexa Chung and Model Suki Waterhouse’s instagram accounts to get my fill of all the catwalk shows as they happened (all from a front row perspective of course). I wowed at the structural creations at Peter Pilotto, cooed over the delicate dresses in Burberry and envied the models that got to wear Erdem’s wondrously white designs.

One trend that I LOVED from the London collections was embellishment. I’ve always loved a cheeky bit of embellishment- it’s an easy way to smarten up an outfit by adding a touch of glamour and sparkle. Think less TOWIE dresses embellished with sequins so that their life depends on it, more subtle yet statement. Small but mighty if you will. At Burberry, arguably the most anticipated LFW show, embellishment was seen on tops, dresses and accessories. And at Christopher Kane, the embellishment was ever so cute, featuring on shoulders and delicate straps. If it’s possible to fall in love with a jumper, then I did.

Luckily for us, embellishment is almost always available to us on the highstreet. Try Zara for embellished statement necklaces- they can be pricey but well worth the investment. Wear over some chunky knitwear. Better still, invest in some embellished knitwear- what a way to kill two birds with one stone ey! Embellishment is not restricted to one item of clothing- whether it’s a beautiful dress, a smart casual jumper or a waist belt over a neutral dress, embellishment is a sure fire way to jazz up an outfit. What will you choose to wear?

The Art of Pulling Off Underwear As Outerwear

A few years ago, I was getting ready for a night out and decided that as I’d bought a beautiful new vintage bra, I would wear a top which would show off its lovely patterning and delicate cut from the side. Feeling quite risqué and trendy at the same time, I headed out of my room only to be immediately confronted with the comment, ‘you’re not ACTUALLY going to wear that OUT are you?!’ With all the confidence knocked out of me like a normal person being asked to simply stand next to Cara Delevingne, I retreated back to my room to change. But I really shouldn’t have caved in, as when done properly, underwear as outerwear is a thoroughly stylish look and can win you serious fashion points for confidence and bravery.

Admittedly, it’s a look not understood by many. ‘Do you know your bra is showing?’ is probably the most common question you will get asked. With this look, if you hadn’t noticed that your bra was showing, then you might need to go for a sight test. Of course, there is a lot of negativity connected to this look, mostly caused by glamour models and attention seekers who feel the need to show off as much skin as possible in the hope that it buys them some minutes/seconds of fame. Oooo catty comment alert! Take a look at some of these fails…

But there is most definitely a way to make underwear as outerwear a sophisticated and sexy look. Just look at the amazing examples from luxurious design houses on the catwalks. And I think I’ve worked out some key steps to making sure you look more Hollywood siren than FHM glamour model.

Black is best

Every fashionista knows that wearing black is your fast track way to achieving a sleek and sophisticated image. And this applies to underwear as well. Take Nicole Scherzinger, Cheryl Cole and Jessica Lowndes as prime examples. By choosing the right bra and teaming it with sheer black with high necklines, they achieve a classy look with a bit of a sexy edge. The key is to show skin without showing too much skin, as confusing as that sounds! Sheer black is your go-to material with this look. Alternatively, monochrome which we know has been huge this year is also a chic look to go for and a bit more bold. Take Rumer Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker who both cover up with white garments featuring  long sleeves or high necklines, but show off a daring black bra underneath.

Keep it Subtle

As the celebrities who do it right show, wearing demure cuts (high necklines, flowing sleeves etc) layered over your underwear is the key to pulling off this look. If you are wearing a sheer or lace top to show off your underwear, choose a bottom which evens out the look like a long pencil skirt or some tailored trousers.

If you don’t want to go all out and show off your entire bra, why not show it from the side with a sleeveless gaping top or a loose fitting maxi. This is where a flash of colour is totally welcome. Why not wear a neon bandeau bra with a neutral garment for a bit of ka-pow! So let’s reverse some roles this summer. Underwear, it’s your turn to step into the spotlight!

Trainers Fit For The Fashion World

Trainers are many things- sporty, comfortable, active…. but would you ever rush to describe them as ‘fashionable’? With the exception of a few pairs, I would hasten to answer with ‘Hmmm’.  The fashion world is known for subverting the uses of many garments of clothing, but now they’ve taken the trainer shoe for their own, putting a spin on it to make them acceptable to wear with a fashionable outfit when you may not be doing any sport. Outrageous!

More specifically, we are talking about the wedge trainer for fashion-forward ladies. Worn by the likes of Beyonce, Kate Bosworth and Lana Del Rey, you can probably already tell that it’s a versatile look that can work with almost any kind of style. Wedge trainers look particularly amazing with an urban look (see Beyonce looking effortlessly cool as usual), or a rather boho look ( Kate Bosworth wears her trainers with a floaty skirt).

They were also all over the catwalk, contrasting wonderfully with pretty dresses and completing the sport luxe looks that were everywhere. Miss Cara Delevingne perfectly shows us the transistion of fashion trainer from catwalk to real life- I love how she dresses up her trainers with a sleek black suit.

The wedge trainers that everybody wanted on their perfectly pedicured feet were the Isabel Marant versions, but for those that can’t afford that hefty designer price tag, there are high street copies everywhere! I found some great classic black wedge trainers with a tan sole in Topshop, which I may just have to purchase on the weekend! I would wear with my grey maxi dress with slits up the side to show off the trainers, or with simple skinnies and a baggy t-shirt. Infact, I may as well just go buy them right now! Laters!

* Wedge Trainer disclaimer- do NOT wear for actual sport, fashion purposes only! 😛 *

Standing Out Whilst Blending In- SS13 Trend Camo

When I think of camo, the following come to mind- my brother’s old action man, 90’s pop stars All Saints and themed uni nights out.  In other words, a little bit novel! But it’s time to rethink this opinion as camo is well and truly on the style radar for this season. Uniform has never looked so good!

For camo inspiration we only need look at DKNY’s huge campaign featuring Cara Delevingne, catwalk shows including Michael Kors, and high street designs from the likes of Zara and Whistles. Camo is the perfect mix of casual and fashionable. And the great thing about this pattern is that is can be worked into any garment- a dress, trousers, jacket….you really can go wild!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As previously said, camo falls hand in hand with casual. This makes it perfect for a fashionable but relaxed daytime look. A pair of skinnies teamed with an army jacket is a classic look- not trying too hard and not scoring any points for bravery, but none the less a great look! Similarly, you could take style inspiration from Queen Beyonce who still looks amazing in her dressed-down camo trousers and military jacket at a a basketball game. I won’t mention the Louboutins she’s wearing as I may get angry with jealousy!

To work camo with other trends this spring, you’re going to have to see red. By that I mean, team it with red, the hottest colour this season! Looking at street style on pinterest I stumbled across this brilliant look of a camo jacket with some bold red shorts. Another big look this season is clashing patterns. Nicola Roberts clashes camo with floral and Rita Ora (who has a snazzy fashion style to say the least) teams it with tiger print and a hot red bag.  I can see the camo trend being huge at festivals this summer, where people will feel more free to pull off edgy adventurous looks with it.

And if you’re more of a ‘dress-up’ girl than a ‘dress down’ one, you could try wearing a camo dress with some ankle boots and a blazer. A fun take on a smart look if you will. Personally I think I’ll be teaming camo with denim shirts, utility jackets and leopard print accessories. When the weather finally pipes up, a maxi skirt with a camo jacket will go down rather nicely too I feel!

Ode To The Humble White Tee

It goes with leather, print, knitwear, the lot! Yes, it’s the classic white tee, the failsafe go-to garment for letting other statement pieces shine or for a simple yet timeless look. If there was an award for the most loyal garment in fashion, the white tee would definitely be nominated!

I get a bit tired of hearing some bloggers say that in order to make an impact you need to go for the most daring look. This being tonnes of colour and print and anything alternative to the mainstream. Whilst this works for many, if everybody did this then our fashion world would be a ‘samey’ to say the least.  Sometimes the most fashionable girl on the street can be wearing the most simple outfit combination.

The white tee has been knocking around for a loooong long time and many designers have used it as an underlay to define their own brands. Take Henry Holland, Chanel, Celine and Moschino Cheap & Chic for example. Chanel and Celine’s logo t-shirts are a firm favourite with fashionistas. Their simple white cuts with bold black logos are teamed with all manner of clothing, displaying their great versatility. I can’t see them losing any popularity anytime soon.

Then there’s Henry Holland whose slogan t-shirts are what found him fame. A personal favourite of mine is ‘I’ll show you who’s boss Kate Moss’. How ballsy!  They’re very reminiscent of the classic ‘Frankie Says Relax’ eighties t-shirt.

And whilst the slogan t-shirts are still going strong, sometimes a plain t-shirt is just what the doctor ordered for an outfit. Just look how amazing Miranda Kerr looks in her white tee and leather short monochrome look. Queen Mollie King of the Saturdays looks effortlessly styled to perfection with her white tee, graphic print skirt and trench, and Lauren Conrad (what is she doing nowadays?) earns herself the title  ‘Look  Of The Day’ award for her daytime look in LA. For these girls, wearing a white tee looks stylish and also allows them to let their statement pieces for the day shine through.

For some fabulous spring 13 looks, team a white tee with a block-coloured blazer ala Kate Moss. Or style one with sequins (see my previous blog post). Monochrome is also allll over the fashion scene at the moment. Use a slogan tee with a black and white striped pencil skirt to recreate a catwalk-esque look.

Spring Trend Alert- Yearning for Yellow

Today something glorious happened- I felt the sun against my face! I think we feared it may never happen again but yes, we experienced the first properly sunny day of the year! And it got me excited about what the new season has in store for my wardrobe.  And I couldn’t be happier that the colour yellow has firmly placed itself on the winner’s podium for no1 colour of the moment!

Yellow has always been my favourite colour, just ask my mum. And it appears it’s not only me that still loves yellow. Louis Vuitton, DKNY, Giambattista Valli to name but a few fashion houses featured it on their SS13 catwalks, Queen Cara Delevingne wore it for her most recent Vogue shoot and a quick perusal of the street style at Milan Fashion Week shows that the city of style was widely embracing the look too.

Of course, wearing yellow can be a tad tricky. Getting the shade right is imperative and it’s all about skin tones etc. You really don’t want to end up looking like big bird or a hyper-active children’s TV presenter too.  But when done correctly, boy does it make you stand out! And its playful tone makes it a bit more fun than always wearing neutrals. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a BIG fan of wearing classic neutral tones, but sometimes teaming them with bursts of colour can really liven up my style.

So whether its lemon, marigold or golden yellow, what’s the best way to go about wearing it?

For daytime style, why not go for some failsafe knitwear and choose a light yellow knit teamed with rolled up jeans and Converse. I would also put a statement necklace over the jumper to really bring out its colour. Light knitwear is perfect for our current climate- getting warmer but not quite there yet.  If you’re really confident with your fashion, then yellow is your new best friend! Why not combine a pair of yellow jeans with a patterned top? You could choose a monochrome checked one perhaps. And for a smarter look, you could opt for a blazer jacket teamed with a classic shirt and jeans ala Millie from MIC.

And despite what the Sugababes said, you will look cooler in a yellow dress. One of my all time favourite dresses was worn by Diane Kruger in 2010. I think this mustard coloured Jason Wu creation is so so so elegant. And remember how beautiful Michelle Williams looked in her Vera Wang Oscars gown?  Sadly, I rarely get an occasion to wear a gown of that magnitude out but Olivia Palermo shows that you can wear yellow dresses in more realistic circumstances and still look utterly amazing.

So although the real sun may not stay out to play for too long this March, get hold of some of your very own sunshine and invest in some yellow pieces! You won’t be disappointed.
