Hunting for the best new festival-wear.

It’s impossible to escape at the moment, leading me to lament that I am in work and not in the deserts of Colorodo partying away to indie music and wearing a long flowing beaded kaftan with ‘cool’ headwear and bare feet. Coachella, the world’s most beautiful and glamorous festival, is on the horizon. Which means that festival season will start to get underway very soon! Which in turn means that summer is surely on it’s way!?

Festival wear is one of the more adventurous forms of dressing and can often verge on fancy dress or costume to reflect the happy go lucky and expressive moods of the festival-goers.

Everybody knows that (in Britain certainly) a pair of wellies is a must on the festival check list and the king of British wellies are of course Hunter.

This British brand that has a history spanning nearly 160 years has a huge fan base, anyone who’s anyone has been papped wearing a pair at a festival, whether they’ve gone for the traditional khaki green or branched out for a patterned or collab pair. I’m sure that the year that Hunter collaborated with Jimmy Choo, you couldn’t move for black snakeskin wellies at Glastonbury!

Not only synonymous with festivals, Hunters are also pretty high up in the fashion world, with the rubber boots making appearances in fashion shoots in edits such as VOGUE and TATLER.

Current Creative Director of Hunter is Alastair Willis, husband of Stella McCartney no less, and his collection last year added a more fashionable twist to the brand’s identity, with pastel colours and ombré patterns. He also ensured that Hunter was not just recognised for it’s wellies, but for other outdoor fashion pieces such as macs and accessories including bags and umbrellas.

I love that these macs are both practical and fashionable, and would look great teamed with a pair of Hunter wellies (what else) at a festival.

Funnily enough, Alastair was inspired by festivals when he created this collection- I love how he’s merged traditional outdoor greens and khaki patterns with new and exciting pastels. He also designed some pieces which would work in everyday life, such as these pretty badass rubber heels and black bomber jacket that Abbey Clancy was photographed in.

This year, there’s sure to be a new and exciting colour or patterned wellie that everyone will want to get their hands on. And if I want a matching mac too, I’ll have to get saving..my Coachella fund may have to go to towards other means!

London Fashion Week- Crazy In Love With Embellishment

Last week it was Paris, this week it was London, now its Milan- oh what a glamorous life the fashion pack live! This week I’ve been relying on the likes of Elle editor Lorraine Candy, IT girl Alexa Chung and Model Suki Waterhouse’s instagram accounts to get my fill of all the catwalk shows as they happened (all from a front row perspective of course). I wowed at the structural creations at Peter Pilotto, cooed over the delicate dresses in Burberry and envied the models that got to wear Erdem’s wondrously white designs.

One trend that I LOVED from the London collections was embellishment. I’ve always loved a cheeky bit of embellishment- it’s an easy way to smarten up an outfit by adding a touch of glamour and sparkle. Think less TOWIE dresses embellished with sequins so that their life depends on it, more subtle yet statement. Small but mighty if you will. At Burberry, arguably the most anticipated LFW show, embellishment was seen on tops, dresses and accessories. And at Christopher Kane, the embellishment was ever so cute, featuring on shoulders and delicate straps. If it’s possible to fall in love with a jumper, then I did.

Luckily for us, embellishment is almost always available to us on the highstreet. Try Zara for embellished statement necklaces- they can be pricey but well worth the investment. Wear over some chunky knitwear. Better still, invest in some embellished knitwear- what a way to kill two birds with one stone ey! Embellishment is not restricted to one item of clothing- whether it’s a beautiful dress, a smart casual jumper or a waist belt over a neutral dress, embellishment is a sure fire way to jazz up an outfit. What will you choose to wear?

Jessica Alba Looking fashionable at New York Fashion Week (who would’ve thought?!)

The fashion cycle is turning once again, and a new season of looks has been thrust upon us- yep, its fashion week time. As Autumn creeps up on us and we begin to pack away our summer lightweights and invest in some key winter pieces, our attention is diverted to spring 2014- that’s fashion for you, always something new on the scene!

As New York Fashion Week comes to a close, and London prepares to host its own one, I thought I’d hail a lady who always looks effortlessly amazing and who certainly  didn’t disappoint at the various f-row events and parties in New York- Miss Jessica Alba!

Jessica Alba is always firmly in my top five style icons. I love her ability to look flawless, whether she is shopping in a supermarket with baby in tow, or posing on the red carpet for a Hollywood premiere. She’s a fan of timeless classic pieces but teams these with kooky daring garments-creating a rather versatile wardrobe. Her best fashion trick is to use vivid colours in everyday outfits to give them a bit of Ka-Pow. AND she’s a big fan of yellow just like me. All in all, I would like to be her please!

At New York Fashion Week Jessica wore some key AW trends. At the Charlotte Ronson show, she defied all rules that knee high socks are only for school girls.  With these she wore classic monochrome stripes, a pleated mini skirt and some very on trend deep berry lipstick. This was a fun look made all the better by an artfully draped leather jacket over the shoulders- draping is BIG this winter guys, perfect for your big oversized coats. Not necessarily winter-friendly though! 😛

Continuing her fun streak, Jessica wore a signature Phillip Lim comic book slogan sweater teamed with navy and black tapered  trousers and red stilettos. But she also displayed her versatility as a style icon, going all demure in an asymmetrically cut black dress with white accessories and sleek hair at Narciso Rodriguez. She also returned to stripes in a smart power blazer and quiff up-do at DVF.

Jess wasn’t the only well-dressed celebrity to grace NYFW. Check out these celebrities looking pretty suave. Bonus points to Olivia Palermo for wearing sunglasses on the frow during a show- so fashion darling!

And of course, I couldn’t blog about fashion week without picking some favourite looks for Spring 2014- what were your favourite shows? Can’t wait for LFW!

Great Scot! AW13 Trend- Tartan

When it comes to my own fashion style, there are a few ‘no-go’ areas which I like to stick by. Whole neon outfits, zebra print, stripper shoes, Clark’s shoes…. and then the big one, tartan. I have managed to avoid wearing tartan for my entire life, that’s 24 years people, quite impressive! My main hesitation with tartan is that it is quite a crazy pattern to wear as ‘fashion’. When I think of it, I think of kilts (obviously) or a punk rock look.

But I think my ‘avoid tartan at all costs’ rule is soon to become void . Not that I’m impressionable or anything but tartan is soon to become everywhere this AW with it appearing all over the catwalk at the AW13 fashion weeks. Longtime lovers of tartan McQueen and Vivienne Westwood have some new acquaintances! Gucci, Moschino, Jil Sander, Stella McCartney, Celine…breath…. all showcased their modern takes on tartan this year. And they’ve managed to convert pretty much the entire fashion world where this pattern is concerned.

These fashion power houses have reinvented tartan for modern-day life- it’s not only traditional green and red designs on the scene. They’ve used pretty pastel colours and neutrals, giving the pattern a much more sleek and sophisticated feel. It also makes it easier for us to incorporate into our wardrobes- tartan is a look not known for fitting in easily with other patterns, colours and styles. It likes to stand alone!  Saying that, for those that love to make a bold statement and have that admirable brave style combined with no fashion fears, the traditional tartan is still very much available to those who want it.

And there is good news for high-street lovers. There are some amazing tartan designs which have filtered down from the catwalk to our favourite shops. Next, F&F (Tesco) and Primark all have strong AW13 designs, from pretty dresses, to checked trousers and statement winter coats.

My favourite high-street shop Zara has some beautiful tartan creations which have helped me change my opinion on tartan. I also found an absolute bargain in the Zara sale- a pair of tartan checked cropped trousers for £9.99! I’ll wear them with black heels and a crisp white shirt for smart occasions or under a chunky winter coat when winter falls upon us. What tartan piece will you invest in this AW?

Trainers Fit For The Fashion World

Trainers are many things- sporty, comfortable, active…. but would you ever rush to describe them as ‘fashionable’? With the exception of a few pairs, I would hasten to answer with ‘Hmmm’.  The fashion world is known for subverting the uses of many garments of clothing, but now they’ve taken the trainer shoe for their own, putting a spin on it to make them acceptable to wear with a fashionable outfit when you may not be doing any sport. Outrageous!

More specifically, we are talking about the wedge trainer for fashion-forward ladies. Worn by the likes of Beyonce, Kate Bosworth and Lana Del Rey, you can probably already tell that it’s a versatile look that can work with almost any kind of style. Wedge trainers look particularly amazing with an urban look (see Beyonce looking effortlessly cool as usual), or a rather boho look ( Kate Bosworth wears her trainers with a floaty skirt).

They were also all over the catwalk, contrasting wonderfully with pretty dresses and completing the sport luxe looks that were everywhere. Miss Cara Delevingne perfectly shows us the transistion of fashion trainer from catwalk to real life- I love how she dresses up her trainers with a sleek black suit.

The wedge trainers that everybody wanted on their perfectly pedicured feet were the Isabel Marant versions, but for those that can’t afford that hefty designer price tag, there are high street copies everywhere! I found some great classic black wedge trainers with a tan sole in Topshop, which I may just have to purchase on the weekend! I would wear with my grey maxi dress with slits up the side to show off the trainers, or with simple skinnies and a baggy t-shirt. Infact, I may as well just go buy them right now! Laters!

* Wedge Trainer disclaimer- do NOT wear for actual sport, fashion purposes only! 😛 *

Standing Out Whilst Blending In- SS13 Trend Camo

When I think of camo, the following come to mind- my brother’s old action man, 90’s pop stars All Saints and themed uni nights out.  In other words, a little bit novel! But it’s time to rethink this opinion as camo is well and truly on the style radar for this season. Uniform has never looked so good!

For camo inspiration we only need look at DKNY’s huge campaign featuring Cara Delevingne, catwalk shows including Michael Kors, and high street designs from the likes of Zara and Whistles. Camo is the perfect mix of casual and fashionable. And the great thing about this pattern is that is can be worked into any garment- a dress, trousers, jacket….you really can go wild!

As previously said, camo falls hand in hand with casual. This makes it perfect for a fashionable but relaxed daytime look. A pair of skinnies teamed with an army jacket is a classic look- not trying too hard and not scoring any points for bravery, but none the less a great look! Similarly, you could take style inspiration from Queen Beyonce who still looks amazing in her dressed-down camo trousers and military jacket at a a basketball game. I won’t mention the Louboutins she’s wearing as I may get angry with jealousy!

To work camo with other trends this spring, you’re going to have to see red. By that I mean, team it with red, the hottest colour this season! Looking at street style on pinterest I stumbled across this brilliant look of a camo jacket with some bold red shorts. Another big look this season is clashing patterns. Nicola Roberts clashes camo with floral and Rita Ora (who has a snazzy fashion style to say the least) teams it with tiger print and a hot red bag.  I can see the camo trend being huge at festivals this summer, where people will feel more free to pull off edgy adventurous looks with it.

And if you’re more of a ‘dress-up’ girl than a ‘dress down’ one, you could try wearing a camo dress with some ankle boots and a blazer. A fun take on a smart look if you will. Personally I think I’ll be teaming camo with denim shirts, utility jackets and leopard print accessories. When the weather finally pipes up, a maxi skirt with a camo jacket will go down rather nicely too I feel!
