Grey for a summer’s day?!

The colour grey doesn’t traditionally conjure up exciting images does it? Rain clouds, concrete, that terrible book…it’s not really up there in the ranks of most popular shades to wear. But then again, black doesn’t conjure up the happiest of images either but is definitely in all of our wardrobes, the favourite shade to dress in to look timeless, sophisticated and slimmer!

Do you currently own anything grey clothing-wise? Or is it something you’ve never really considered? Maybe you might need some persuading on this front!

Grey is a fantastic shade for so many reasons. Firstly, it suits all skin tones because it comes in (just as the book suggests) over fifty shades! Because of this, it’s so easy to work with and very versatile. Lucky for us the high street seems to have caught on to the grey trend and there is plenty of it there for us to lap up be it clothes, shoes or accessories.

Grey clothes, accessories and shoes for all!

Grey is a great multi-seasonal neutral shade which can be worn in block (just by itself) for a sophisticated sleek look, or used to bolster and complement other colours. As mentioned, grey is the perfect shade to suit all types of skin tone and will always highlight and show off a tan too. Top marks!
In summer, teaming with pure white will look amazing and effortlessly stylish. I’m a big fan of midi and maxi skirts at the moment so will definitely be on the lookout for a skirt to replicate these looks below,  finished off with a pair of wedges.

Grey is suitable for both casual and smart occasions too. Whether you want to wear it on the office, for a day out shopping or to a wedding or other special event, the high street has a lot to offer, from short suits, to Grecian style dresses and jersey t-shirt dresses.

If all-grey outfits are just not you, then you can always use grey to complement and highlight brighter colours which you already have in your wardrobe to show them off at their best.

This beautiful coral Reiss shirt dress looks amazing with these grey accessories – either as a daytime  look with the flats or a pretty evening look with the heels.

Or check out this feminine jumpsuit (also from Reiss) which looks fab with deep red and gold accessories. The perfect outfit for a wedding.

grey and pale pink= perfection

As you can see from my outfit examples, grey works well with all colours and there’s really not one I can think of which wouldn’t go!

So although perhaps traditionally viewed as a slightly bland shade to wear, I think you’ll agree that grey can be transformed into a flattering, feminine and ultra stylish look. Have a peek at these high street offerings below, all available at this very moment, just in time for summer! 🙂

Will you be investing in any grey-wear this summer? And what colours will you be pairing it with?

Emma Roberts- the princess of clashing patterns and boho vibes. 💜💛💜

She’s the niece of Julia Roberts so her beauty is anticipated even before you’ve seen her- Emma Roberts is one of Hollywood’s most talented young ladies at the moment and is fast becoming not only known for her sterling acting skills, but also for her confident and fun fashion style. Think tomboy and girly girl at the same time- impressive!

What I love about Emma’s style is how laid back it is when she’s ‘off-duty’. Often heading out in loose fitting floaty numbers paired with scruffy converses or a thrift shop vintage fur coat, Emma has achieved both a casual Californian style and a fun and innovative one.

Emma is a big fan of effortlessly clashing patterns, particularly leopard print  (one of my personal favourites). I love how she successfully combines things that you would never think would look good together. Who would’ve thought Bart Simpson would look so chic paired with an A-line skirt?

She clearly loves experimenting with her clothes, and being the Hollywood actress she is, has lots of exciting opportunities and events to attend where she can exercise her style ideas. From Coachella pool parties, to sitting Frow at a fashion show and attending premieres, Emma always manages to execute her wonderful personal style perfectly.

She’s also a great fan of accessorising, be it with fab fifties shades or a cute (but I’m sure verrrry expensive) designer bag.

So Emma’s style recipe seems to be find some boho patterns, mix with a little bit of vintage, add a few drops of classic designer, fold in some playful motifs and finish off with a twist of fifties style. et voila! An exciting and refreshing style! Emma has definitely encouraged me to clash and mix up some of my summer outfits!

Hunting for the best new festival-wear.

It’s impossible to escape at the moment, leading me to lament that I am in work and not in the deserts of Colorodo partying away to indie music and wearing a long flowing beaded kaftan with ‘cool’ headwear and bare feet. Coachella, the world’s most beautiful and glamorous festival, is on the horizon. Which means that festival season will start to get underway very soon! Which in turn means that summer is surely on it’s way!?

Festival wear is one of the more adventurous forms of dressing and can often verge on fancy dress or costume to reflect the happy go lucky and expressive moods of the festival-goers.

Everybody knows that (in Britain certainly) a pair of wellies is a must on the festival check list and the king of British wellies are of course Hunter.

This British brand that has a history spanning nearly 160 years has a huge fan base, anyone who’s anyone has been papped wearing a pair at a festival, whether they’ve gone for the traditional khaki green or branched out for a patterned or collab pair. I’m sure that the year that Hunter collaborated with Jimmy Choo, you couldn’t move for black snakeskin wellies at Glastonbury!

Not only synonymous with festivals, Hunters are also pretty high up in the fashion world, with the rubber boots making appearances in fashion shoots in edits such as VOGUE and TATLER.

Current Creative Director of Hunter is Alastair Willis, husband of Stella McCartney no less, and his collection last year added a more fashionable twist to the brand’s identity, with pastel colours and ombré patterns. He also ensured that Hunter was not just recognised for it’s wellies, but for other outdoor fashion pieces such as macs and accessories including bags and umbrellas.

I love that these macs are both practical and fashionable, and would look great teamed with a pair of Hunter wellies (what else) at a festival.

Funnily enough, Alastair was inspired by festivals when he created this collection- I love how he’s merged traditional outdoor greens and khaki patterns with new and exciting pastels. He also designed some pieces which would work in everyday life, such as these pretty badass rubber heels and black bomber jacket that Abbey Clancy was photographed in.

This year, there’s sure to be a new and exciting colour or patterned wellie that everyone will want to get their hands on. And if I want a matching mac too, I’ll have to get saving..my Coachella fund may have to go to towards other means!

The Perfect Style Icon for Me…

I’ve been blogging as a hobby for a few years now and just like fashion trends, my style icons can change from season to season.

I can remember becoming obsessed with Sienna Miller’s boho style many years ago, inspired by Victoria Beckham’s sophisticated and pretty tailoring when she launched her fashion label, and endlessly impressed by Kate Moss’ ability to make anything look cool over the years.

This week I thought I’d revisit one of my steady style icons, Ashley Madekwe. She’s a fairly well-known British actress now living in LA (you may recognise her from Scandal and Secret Diary Of A Call Girl) but perhaps not up in the ranks with Kate and Victoria. I first discovered her amazing style through her blog ‘Ring My Bell’.

The thing I love most about Ashley’s style is that it’s often simplistic but still has an adventurous edge to it. She’s a big fan of wearing neutrals and then adding some fun to her outfit through some playful accessories or a blast of colour or pattern.

Ashley uses her blog to document her every-day style and again, this is why I love her- her style is easily achievable and actually does define ‘every-day’.

Saying that, Ashley is an actress living in LA, so gets to attend lots of glamorous events. This is where I lust after outfits which I probably wouldn’t be able to wear for everyday occasions!

Whether she’s going for timeless monochrome

Pretty in pastels…

Or going neutral while some snappy clothing shapes do the talking, Ashley has conquered the art of everyday street style and glamorous LA actress style simultaneously.

Ashley, I love your timeless, simplistic yet trendy style and will continue to try to replicate it for many years to come! I wish I had your wardrobe!

Stylish Not Just On A Saturday- Rochelle Humes

*Hoorah, I’ve finally had time to blog!! As I’m sure all you fellow bloggers know, balancing both a full-time job and a blog can be quite the challenge. Throw in organising a change of job and a new flat in a new City and you find you’re even more pressed for time! But I’m happy to say I eventually  found some free time to do what I like to do best- talk fashion!*

I heard a crazy statistic on the news today (please don’t ask me to remember the exact statistic as I heard it not long after I’d woken up very early, let’s just say it made me listen), that we all spend a HUGE part of our day trawling through various apps and websites on our phones. Whether its Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or the Daily Mail showbiz app (guilty pleasure of course), we are constantly aware of everything going on around us. This suits me fine as I get to nose on what everyone is wearing!

This week my celebrity style crush has to go to Miss Rochelle Humes of Saturdays girl band fame. She brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘yummy mummy’! At the start of the week she appeared on TV wearing a very on-trend pink PVC pencil skirt. When Lady GaGa wore her own pink PVC skirt a couple of years ago, little did she know that her ‘out-there’ look would eventually catch on for the mainstream market! Spotted on other celebs including Kim Kardashian and some of the Towie girls, these skirts are incredibly statement. Be prepared to dazzle onlookers with the shine for a start! Wear with a cropped top and heels in the evening, or teamed with cute knitwear for a more casual look. Why not invest in a stunning statement necklace too, just like Rochelle’s pretty flower one. So jealous of that girl! If you’re looking to pocket a PVC skirt off the high street, ASOS is the place to look.

And for her appearance at the Pride of Britain Awards alongside fellow Saturday band mates and husband Marvin, Rochelle took the crown for best dressed girl-band member in her simply beautiful nude embellished floor length gown. This rather ethereal dress teamed with gothic lips, a loose plait and metallic clutch looks amazing I think! Embellishment is always en vogue (see my previous blog post on embellishment at LFW 13), and the trend is set to stay with designers including Christoper Kane and Burberry using it heavily in their new collections. River Island have some lovely embellished designs- I absolutely love this dress shown below. So well done Rochelle, you can have 100 house-points for your fashion efforts this week! And I’ll give myself a pat on the back for finding some time to blog!

My Favourite Celebrity Fashion Looks From This Week

In the morning before I go to work, I have a strict regime; get up, get dressed, make breakfast, read the showbiz section of the daily mail…

I get a lot of gratification out of going on the Daily Mail app, not only because I like to spot the awful spelling and grammatical errors on the pieces, and also read the amusing comments that people leave, but mainly to keep up to date with what the celebrities are wearing that week! And I think a lot of you ladies have a similar view towards this website- main procrastinator at work maybe??

This week I have picked three of my favourite looks from the celeb ladies. Yes, I know it’s only Wednesday, but these celebs are on a mission! Although the celebrities wearing them are rich beyond their wildest dreams, I think the looks can easily be copied using high street buys.

Kate Middleton

Of course I couldn’t start with anybody else! Yesterday evening, the nation/world waited on tenterhooks to catch a glimpse of our new royal prince. When Kate and Will emerged with a beautiful little baby in swaddle, you could be forgiven for also equally wowing at Kate and how amazing she looked in her blue polka dot Jenny Packham dress!

Kate has worn Jenny Packham many a time- I thought she looked the definition of princess in her long teal gown which she wore to an Olympic ceremony last year. Kate’s elegant style can be very literal at times- I remember when she wore a maple leaf shaped fascinator by Sylvia Fletcher for her Canada visit and she and Will both wore soft baby blue for the presentation of their newborn.

There is absolutely no doubt that the dress she wore yesterday will have flown off the shelves within minutes. Some people are nutters! Remember though, Kate is also a fan of high street dresses, so keep your eyes peeled for future outfits.

Rachel Bilson

There was a time when I was around the 17 years age mark that I had a small obsession with Rachel Bilson. Watching the OC I used to wish I could have her wardrobe and her (fictional) life. Although her real life is nothing to scoff at! She went slightly off the radar in the UK at least after OC fame, but when I saw this picture of her at the To Do list premiere this week, she skyrocketed back up into my best-dressed list!

The dress in question is a stunning Oscar De La Renta Resort 2014 number. I absolutely love the cobalt colour with the delicate flowers that trickle down the dress. And the cut and shape of the dress is what makes it so unique. The tight skirt with the garment fanning out on her hipline is very pretty. Teamed with simple hair and black accessories including Casadei shoes, I think she looks stunning. Top marks Rachel!

Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo’s style makes me smile. She’s so versatile which is what I strive to be. One day, she will look the picture of elegance in a billowing dress. The next day it’s time to be smart in an impossibly expensive androgynous tailored jacket and sky-scraper heels. And she’s adventurous, never afraid to take a risk either by wearing bold patterns, unusual cuts or mixing and clashing things.

This is precisely what she’s done for her New York outing this week. Where some would achieve the ‘crazy bag lady’ look by mixing and matching, she achieves the ‘Vogue model during a photo shoot’ look. I can see sixties, sport luxe, animal print and graphic prints all in one look, and it looks so so fashionable! The cute sixties mini-dress which she’s teamed with a huge statement necklace, leopard print pumps, an open knitwear netted cardy and of course, a designer handbag in rich red are all key looks from this fashion season.

So I have my looks for this week, now comes the task of finding some high street buys so that I can copy them! I think it may be wishful thinking to stumble across a De La Renta dress in the clearance sale after all….

From Catwalk, To Celeb, To High Street- 5 Spring Fashion Buys!

Catwalk envy, it’s not pretty. The phrase ‘look but don’t touch’ would be extremely relevant for the garments that frequent the runways. We watch the shows in their fabulous settings, discover the best new designs, get totally inspired and then fall short of reaching our goals when we realise we might not be able to stretch to that £400 dress…well not this month anyway (wishful thinking!) And then to rub it in even more, we then have to redirect our jealousy to all of our favourite celebrities who are first in line to wear these exciting new fashions. Don’t even get me started on the grim reality that these super rich celebrities usually get these luxurious items ‘on the (fashion) house’!

But amidst all this negativity, we do have a saving grace! Three cheers for the high street! Making luxury fashion possible for a mass market. They really do a spectacular job of recreating our favourite catwalk looks at much more affordable pricing. And thus, fashion trickles down from catwalk to celebrity to high street and then quickly into our wardrobes! How many times have you been in a shop and seen a near identical double of a designer piece hanging right in front of you shouting ‘buy me for 1/100th of the designer price’!  And in this sense we are very lucky to have the high street.

So I got to looking for some key spring fashion trends inspired by the designers, and using the catwalk to celeb to high street filter, discovered some great finds!

1)      The Print Blazer

Blazers can safely be placed into the capsule wardrobe category. You can dress them up or down, they come in every colour and material that you could possibly need. But this spring, you should be going big with your blazer or going home! A print blazer is such an easy way to make a statement and can be worn with all manner of clothing. On the catwalk we saw Matthew Williamson, Stella McCartney and House of Holland all showcase their versions of a printed blazer. Stella’s in particular struck a chord with the fashion pack for their sophisticated yet zany prints. And the celebrity world lapped them up. Check out style icon Miranda Kerr in her floral Stella blazer, teamed with skinnies and neutral basics. Now for the most important part- buy your own amazing print blazer at Zara this spring! I absolutely love this blue and white ceramic print one which I would wear with skinnies like Miranda, or over a shift dress.

2)      The Maxi Skirt

Last year Maxi skirts were a revelation for girls all around the world. A perfect way to look fashionable without having to try too hard. Worn defiantly with gladiator sandals  even though the british ‘summer’ was more suited to wellies, it was a rather boho look. This year, they’ve taken on a more delicate, pretty aesthetic. Sheer, often pleated and in pastel and light spring colours, on the catwalk this Rocha Maxi Skirt set the standard for maxi skirts for SS13. Then Jennifer Lawrence brought the look to life with her flowing white pleated maxi cinched in around her tiny waist and completed with wedges and a vest for a comfortable yet trendy daytime look. Buy your own maxi skirt at Mango this spring. They do it in a wonderful range of colours but I thought this lemon yellow one was particularly striking.

3)      The Drop-Waist Dress

This trend is partly inspired by the catwalk trend and partly by the upcoming HUGE film that is The Great Gatsby! This style of dress has a distinct 1920’s glamour feel . Victoria Beckham brought this style of dress into Vogue a few seasons ago and it’s still very popular in the fashion world. Check out posh in her own design (so bloody lucky), and then compare it to this ever so cute design from H&M, an absolute steal at £29.99. The frills, the colour… I love it all!

4)      The Perspex Heel

At all the fashion weeks this year, there was one common dominant force. Perspex. It  was ready for world domination! From bags to stunning pieces of jewellery, the wow factor really came in the form of shoes. Chanel’s Perspex heels were a wonder to behold in their other-worldly catwalk setting, and Christian Louboutin did not want to be left behind, making sure his Perspex designs were on the all the best perfectly pedicured feet of the fashion world. Then the celebrities followed suit. Emma Stone worked her Perspex Louboutins into her monochrome look at a premiere, whilst posh totty Millie Mackintosh  featured her sky-scraper Perspex heels in her very own fashion blog. For your high street buy, invest in these Lelia pyramid stud heels in mint green from Reiss. Perfectly Perspex!

5)      The Winged Bag

One of the best feelings in the world is scouting out an utter fashion bargain. Even better when it looks near identical to a luxury designer piece! One of THE bags of the moment is the Celine winged handbag. The Kardashians’ each have about eight which should give an indication of their luxury factor. My favourite Kardashian, Kourtney (the most sophisticated of the bunch by far), wears her black one with a daring print jumpsuit and looks pretty darn fashionable. And if you’d like to recreate the Celine handbag look then it’s going to cost you…. (drumroll)….£20! Snap up this Topshop lookalike which is currently in the sale! Waaa.

So there you have it! A little bit of inspiration for you. Going from the catwalk to the sidewalk (excuse the Americanism) really is possible these days!
