Top Trousers

After a couple of exciting but rather tiring weeks of moving house, I’ve finally had time to sit down and blog about my favourite subject again- fashion! I can never stay away too long!

Following on from my blog post about what top styles we should be wearing for our body shape (which I’m chuffed to say got readers from all over the globe), this week I thought I’d move on to trouser shapes.

Trousers are our everyday favourites. Easy to pull on and versatile enough to wear in the day through to the evening, I’m sure you’ve got a fair few pairs in your wardrobe yes?

Although we may all own a lot of pairs of trousers, a large majority of women do confess that they find trouser buying the hardest out of all the garment types.

The problem with trousers is that whilst they may look amazing from one angle, from another they may not look as good. They can also stunt our height and widen our appearance-boooo. Alternatively, they can lengthen our legs and slimline our figure- yippee!

So what trouser types should you be wearing for your shape?

The Bootleg Jean- Universally Flattering.

Let’s start with the best first. If you’re anything like me, jeans will be at the top of your trouser list. I wear them almost every day and have all the styles from A-Z in every shade of denim. Their practicality is hard to beat.

The best style for flattering your body shape is undeniably the bootleg Jean.

The relaxed shape of the bootleg jean will do wonders for your figure, balancing everything out and not clinging on to anything that you don’t want them to.

This style works well for ladies with bigger thighs and a tummy, because the top of the jean skims over you and the slight a-line cut at the bottom of the jean makes everything appear thinner whilst still maintaining a lovely shape.

They also work well for petite ladies, giving them them curves to play with.

Cropped Trousers.

Cropped trousers are a great style for ladies with skinny legs and a bigger upper body (Apple shapes) who are looking to show off their lovely legs.

Cropped trousers will show off elegant ankles and if you are very tall, can shorten your appearance slightly.

The main thing to watch with cropped trousers is that the trouser doesn’t stop and cut off across the widest part of your calf, as this will widen the appearance of your legs.

If you are larger on your bottom and thigh choose a slightly wider style and ensure it finishes just below your calf.

As the ladies show above, this style looks fab with elegant heels.

Wide Fit Trousers.

This style worn with heels, as long as possible in length, are very flattering especially for ladies who want to disguise bigger thighs.

Try to find a style with a side fastening as this with lengthen the leg and flatten the tummy. It’ll also make you appear taller.

Team wide leg trousers with a slim fitting top to create a lovely flattering outfit!

High-Waisted Trousers.

This style suits ladies with long legs and little waists. If you are the lucky owner of a washboard stomach, this style teamed with a cropped top will look amazing on you! Or for a smarter look, copy Jessica’s style and tuck in a shirt with some.

These are just some of the styles that are available to us. When you’re looking for your next pair of trousers, remember these little tips;

1) Avoid too much detail on trousers such as large pockets if you are bigger on your bottom half as they will add unwanted weight to this section. Alternatively, detail and pockets can add volume to a boyish shape. See Mrs Beckham’s trousers below.

2) Pleats are common in trousers but are notorious for adding unwanted weight to the thigh area so take care!

3) Flat-fronted trousers and side fastenings are slimming to the figure. Holly’s flat-fronted, side fastening trousers show off her amazing waist and slim her legs.

4) The longer the trouser, the more flattering appearance of your figure. As a result of this, heels are a pair of trouser’s best friend!

5) When shopping, don’t be put off from buying if a pair of trousers are too long or big on the waist. They can easily be altered! Also, when trying on trousers, try to look at them from as many angles as possible to ensure they are right for you.

Hope this has helped ladies. Happy trouser-shopping 🙂

Marks and Sparks hits the fashion mark.

Marks and Spencer is the upmarket British retailer that has brought us Percy Pigs (and friends) and luxurious ‘Two Can Dine For £10’ meals (how can I get alllll that food for only ten pounds?!)

When I’m in the mood for a culinary treat, M&S is where I’ll hastily head, ready to part with my cash. But for my wardrobe….I can’t say I’ve ever been tempted. Until recently that is!

In recent years M&S has managed to transform itself from a clothes shop for the older lady only, where cashmere jumpers and tailored trousers were the main attraction,  to a retailer who has successfully targeted multiple markets through launching several different clothing collections.

Twiggy, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Helen Mirren, Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo (the first two having their own collections for M&S) are all high profile figures and fashion role models for various audiences.  These ladies have all helped raise the profile for M&S clothing by wearing and advertising the brand.

Olivia and Alexa both modelled ‘the’ skirt of summer 2015, which sold out and had a waiting list! Who would have thought a little old skirt from M&S could create such a frenzy?!

Through winning over hugely influential fashion figures of all ages and also using them in their advertising campaigns, M&S caught the attention of the younger fashion pack whilst still keeping the interest of their older consumers.

This risky marketing move seems to have paid off. Where other companies have failed trying to target too many groups rather than honing in on one, M&S has caught and held the attention of everyone it seems!

And their new collections have got some brilliant pieces which are both timeless and trendy at the same time.

These pieces from the Autograph collection are right up my street and can be mixed and matched to your heart’s content. And having been featured in a Vogue edit, there may be a few more sell-outs when people see the very affordable price tags!

The Limited Collection is also a new found favorite with the younger generation and is perhaps a little more trend-led and fun. This seasons collection has a great sports-luxe fused with seventies feel to it. These pieces are great for day-time wear whereas I’d say the Autograph collection is better suited for more sophisticated outfit options and work-wear.

I’ll definitely be buying from both these collections in the future. But aside from these two, there are plenty of other collections to chose from within M&S. Why not take a look next time you pop in for your Percy Pigs?

Stylish Not Just On A Saturday- Rochelle Humes

*Hoorah, I’ve finally had time to blog!! As I’m sure all you fellow bloggers know, balancing both a full-time job and a blog can be quite the challenge. Throw in organising a change of job and a new flat in a new City and you find you’re even more pressed for time! But I’m happy to say I eventually  found some free time to do what I like to do best- talk fashion!*

I heard a crazy statistic on the news today (please don’t ask me to remember the exact statistic as I heard it not long after I’d woken up very early, let’s just say it made me listen), that we all spend a HUGE part of our day trawling through various apps and websites on our phones. Whether its Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or the Daily Mail showbiz app (guilty pleasure of course), we are constantly aware of everything going on around us. This suits me fine as I get to nose on what everyone is wearing!

This week my celebrity style crush has to go to Miss Rochelle Humes of Saturdays girl band fame. She brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘yummy mummy’! At the start of the week she appeared on TV wearing a very on-trend pink PVC pencil skirt. When Lady GaGa wore her own pink PVC skirt a couple of years ago, little did she know that her ‘out-there’ look would eventually catch on for the mainstream market! Spotted on other celebs including Kim Kardashian and some of the Towie girls, these skirts are incredibly statement. Be prepared to dazzle onlookers with the shine for a start! Wear with a cropped top and heels in the evening, or teamed with cute knitwear for a more casual look. Why not invest in a stunning statement necklace too, just like Rochelle’s pretty flower one. So jealous of that girl! If you’re looking to pocket a PVC skirt off the high street, ASOS is the place to look.

And for her appearance at the Pride of Britain Awards alongside fellow Saturday band mates and husband Marvin, Rochelle took the crown for best dressed girl-band member in her simply beautiful nude embellished floor length gown. This rather ethereal dress teamed with gothic lips, a loose plait and metallic clutch looks amazing I think! Embellishment is always en vogue (see my previous blog post on embellishment at LFW 13), and the trend is set to stay with designers including Christoper Kane and Burberry using it heavily in their new collections. River Island have some lovely embellished designs- I absolutely love this dress shown below. So well done Rochelle, you can have 100 house-points for your fashion efforts this week! And I’ll give myself a pat on the back for finding some time to blog!

My Favourite Celebrity Fashion Looks From This Week

In the morning before I go to work, I have a strict regime; get up, get dressed, make breakfast, read the showbiz section of the daily mail…

I get a lot of gratification out of going on the Daily Mail app, not only because I like to spot the awful spelling and grammatical errors on the pieces, and also read the amusing comments that people leave, but mainly to keep up to date with what the celebrities are wearing that week! And I think a lot of you ladies have a similar view towards this website- main procrastinator at work maybe??

This week I have picked three of my favourite looks from the celeb ladies. Yes, I know it’s only Wednesday, but these celebs are on a mission! Although the celebrities wearing them are rich beyond their wildest dreams, I think the looks can easily be copied using high street buys.

Kate Middleton

Of course I couldn’t start with anybody else! Yesterday evening, the nation/world waited on tenterhooks to catch a glimpse of our new royal prince. When Kate and Will emerged with a beautiful little baby in swaddle, you could be forgiven for also equally wowing at Kate and how amazing she looked in her blue polka dot Jenny Packham dress!

Kate has worn Jenny Packham many a time- I thought she looked the definition of princess in her long teal gown which she wore to an Olympic ceremony last year. Kate’s elegant style can be very literal at times- I remember when she wore a maple leaf shaped fascinator by Sylvia Fletcher for her Canada visit and she and Will both wore soft baby blue for the presentation of their newborn.

There is absolutely no doubt that the dress she wore yesterday will have flown off the shelves within minutes. Some people are nutters! Remember though, Kate is also a fan of high street dresses, so keep your eyes peeled for future outfits.

Rachel Bilson

There was a time when I was around the 17 years age mark that I had a small obsession with Rachel Bilson. Watching the OC I used to wish I could have her wardrobe and her (fictional) life. Although her real life is nothing to scoff at! She went slightly off the radar in the UK at least after OC fame, but when I saw this picture of her at the To Do list premiere this week, she skyrocketed back up into my best-dressed list!

The dress in question is a stunning Oscar De La Renta Resort 2014 number. I absolutely love the cobalt colour with the delicate flowers that trickle down the dress. And the cut and shape of the dress is what makes it so unique. The tight skirt with the garment fanning out on her hipline is very pretty. Teamed with simple hair and black accessories including Casadei shoes, I think she looks stunning. Top marks Rachel!

Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo’s style makes me smile. She’s so versatile which is what I strive to be. One day, she will look the picture of elegance in a billowing dress. The next day it’s time to be smart in an impossibly expensive androgynous tailored jacket and sky-scraper heels. And she’s adventurous, never afraid to take a risk either by wearing bold patterns, unusual cuts or mixing and clashing things.

This is precisely what she’s done for her New York outing this week. Where some would achieve the ‘crazy bag lady’ look by mixing and matching, she achieves the ‘Vogue model during a photo shoot’ look. I can see sixties, sport luxe, animal print and graphic prints all in one look, and it looks so so fashionable! The cute sixties mini-dress which she’s teamed with a huge statement necklace, leopard print pumps, an open knitwear netted cardy and of course, a designer handbag in rich red are all key looks from this fashion season.

So I have my looks for this week, now comes the task of finding some high street buys so that I can copy them! I think it may be wishful thinking to stumble across a De La Renta dress in the clearance sale after all….
