Jessica Alba Looking fashionable at New York Fashion Week (who would’ve thought?!)

The fashion cycle is turning once again, and a new season of looks has been thrust upon us- yep, its fashion week time. As Autumn creeps up on us and we begin to pack away our summer lightweights and invest in some key winter pieces, our attention is diverted to spring 2014- that’s fashion for you, always something new on the scene!

As New York Fashion Week comes to a close, and London prepares to host its own one, I thought I’d hail a lady who always looks effortlessly amazing and who certainly  didn’t disappoint at the various f-row events and parties in New York- Miss Jessica Alba!

Jessica Alba is always firmly in my top five style icons. I love her ability to look flawless, whether she is shopping in a supermarket with baby in tow, or posing on the red carpet for a Hollywood premiere. She’s a fan of timeless classic pieces but teams these with kooky daring garments-creating a rather versatile wardrobe. Her best fashion trick is to use vivid colours in everyday outfits to give them a bit of Ka-Pow. AND she’s a big fan of yellow just like me. All in all, I would like to be her please!

At New York Fashion Week Jessica wore some key AW trends. At the Charlotte Ronson show, she defied all rules that knee high socks are only for school girls.  With these she wore classic monochrome stripes, a pleated mini skirt and some very on trend deep berry lipstick. This was a fun look made all the better by an artfully draped leather jacket over the shoulders- draping is BIG this winter guys, perfect for your big oversized coats. Not necessarily winter-friendly though! 😛

Continuing her fun streak, Jessica wore a signature Phillip Lim comic book slogan sweater teamed with navy and black tapered  trousers and red stilettos. But she also displayed her versatility as a style icon, going all demure in an asymmetrically cut black dress with white accessories and sleek hair at Narciso Rodriguez. She also returned to stripes in a smart power blazer and quiff up-do at DVF.

Jess wasn’t the only well-dressed celebrity to grace NYFW. Check out these celebrities looking pretty suave. Bonus points to Olivia Palermo for wearing sunglasses on the frow during a show- so fashion darling!

And of course, I couldn’t blog about fashion week without picking some favourite looks for Spring 2014- what were your favourite shows? Can’t wait for LFW!

Make Your Move Checkerboard Chick!

Checkerboard and fashion. To me this sounds like something a character from Alice In Wonderland may wear, but this spring Louis Vuitton proved that its very much a real trend! Using spring yellows, olive greens and monochrome, the Louis Vuitton ss13 show in Paris was a spectacular show where models descended from escalators onto the checkerboard catwalk, as if they were off for a spot of shopping rather than walking at a huge runway event!

This show resulted in the crème de la crème of the fashion world tripping over each other to get their hands on the various checkerboard designs. Jessica Alba, Kristen Stewart, Kendall Jenner and Miranda Kerr to name but a few. From shift dresses, to cropped tops and miniskirts, this trend is incredibly versatile and has a distinct seventies feel. There was also a lovely contrast at Louis Vuitton between the bold checkerboard patterns and the feminine bows and beehives which the models donned. Checkerboards can look girly and empowering at the same time. Great news!

The current monochrome craze that we are experiencing goes hand in hand with the traditional checkerboard look. Black and white checks are the boldest choice to go for. I think it looks amazing with a hot pink. Head to my fave shop Zara for some inspiration. They are loving monochrome with hot pink at the moment!

As we saw on the catwalk, wearing head to toe checkerboard is a very brave look! If you want to adapt it to your everyday lifestyle, why not wear a monochrome checkerboard t-shirt with some coloured jeans? For a dressed up look, a checkerboard pencil skirt with a metallic or leather top would be bang on trend. Or you could dress up a neutral outfit with several checkerboard accessories. Pencil point shoes are another big trend this spring.  Keep a look out for some checkerboard ones and kill two birds with one stone!

And Gwen Stefani proves how important makeup can be when wearing such a bold trend. Her statement red lips really bring out the stark black and white design of her checkerboard trench. Completed with some classic black shades, she really does look like a true Hollywood star.

Ode To The Humble White Tee

It goes with leather, print, knitwear, the lot! Yes, it’s the classic white tee, the failsafe go-to garment for letting other statement pieces shine or for a simple yet timeless look. If there was an award for the most loyal garment in fashion, the white tee would definitely be nominated!

I get a bit tired of hearing some bloggers say that in order to make an impact you need to go for the most daring look. This being tonnes of colour and print and anything alternative to the mainstream. Whilst this works for many, if everybody did this then our fashion world would be a ‘samey’ to say the least.  Sometimes the most fashionable girl on the street can be wearing the most simple outfit combination.

The white tee has been knocking around for a loooong long time and many designers have used it as an underlay to define their own brands. Take Henry Holland, Chanel, Celine and Moschino Cheap & Chic for example. Chanel and Celine’s logo t-shirts are a firm favourite with fashionistas. Their simple white cuts with bold black logos are teamed with all manner of clothing, displaying their great versatility. I can’t see them losing any popularity anytime soon.

Then there’s Henry Holland whose slogan t-shirts are what found him fame. A personal favourite of mine is ‘I’ll show you who’s boss Kate Moss’. How ballsy!  They’re very reminiscent of the classic ‘Frankie Says Relax’ eighties t-shirt.

And whilst the slogan t-shirts are still going strong, sometimes a plain t-shirt is just what the doctor ordered for an outfit. Just look how amazing Miranda Kerr looks in her white tee and leather short monochrome look. Queen Mollie King of the Saturdays looks effortlessly styled to perfection with her white tee, graphic print skirt and trench, and Lauren Conrad (what is she doing nowadays?) earns herself the title  ‘Look  Of The Day’ award for her daytime look in LA. For these girls, wearing a white tee looks stylish and also allows them to let their statement pieces for the day shine through.

For some fabulous spring 13 looks, team a white tee with a block-coloured blazer ala Kate Moss. Or style one with sequins (see my previous blog post). Monochrome is also allll over the fashion scene at the moment. Use a slogan tee with a black and white striped pencil skirt to recreate a catwalk-esque look.

Styling Sequins (NB Not a TOWIE Girl in Sight)

I have bad memories of wearing sequins. When I was younger, I used to attend a ballet school and each year would have to wear a heavily sequined costume for the annual show. Let’s just say sequins on bare skin do not mix harmoniously. Needless to say, I steered clear of them for a while.

But recently, I’ve had a real craving to embrace them once again. After all, they are so pretty! And really are eye-catchers. This could be down to the fact that sequins made an appearance at several SS13 shows. Now, I’m not talking about embracing them like the cast of TOWIE has embraced them with their tiny mini dresses and whatnot! Whilst this ultra glam look works for many a girl, it’s simply not my style.

So I got to browsing the internet for some inspiration and found countless examples of sequins looking very classy indeed. One of my style icons Olivia Palermo (who luckily for her  but not so luckily for us could pull off wearing a bin-liner), looks stunning, classy and incredibly fashionable in an outfit which comprises of  the capsule pieces of jeans and a white shirt along with this sleek silver sequined jacket. Similarly, she proves sequins are no one hit wonder, displaying more of an evening look in sleek and sophisticated black sequins, cinched in at the waist with a chunky belt and completed with a huge leather bag.

And if you’re looking for confirmation that wearing a sequined piece alongside classic pieces really does give you maximum fashion points, then you need only look to Kate Moss, Jessica Alba and Kristen Stewart for confirmation. If sequins came in human form, Kate Moss would snap them all up as best friends. Sequins really do come under the category ‘Statement’ so you need to put them alongside fashionable classics so to allow them their right to (literally and metaphorically) shine.

I also took to Pinterest to track down some inspiring street style where sequins are concerned and fell in love with this green sequin maxi. It looks amazing with this simple white tee and a little colour clashing with a blue clutch and pink heels. Very brave, and this risk definitely works!

I recently made an eBay purchase of a yellow maxi (see my previous blog post ‘yearning for yellow’), and hope to track down a sequined cardigan to team it with. Then I’ll just have to wait for the weather to turn at least bearable so I can wear it… come on weather, do it for us fashionistas!
