Necklines Nailed.

Tops- we wear them everyday in all different styles, but are you really aware of what your neckline is doing for you and your body shape?

It may sound rather trivial but your neckline can determine how good you look! Get it right, you’re showing off your best assets to perfection, but choose incorrectly and the wrong style can emphasise something you’d rather disguise and ultimately leave you unhappy with your outfit choice.

So what necklines should you be wearing for your shape?

The Round Neck.

Olivia Palermo

Let’s start off with the hardest one- the round neck top is a common choice with us all. The biggest issue with round neck tops is how they can highlight big or small busts and also our necks!

If you’re big busted, round neck tops can make you appear square, and if you’re small-busted, they can highlight a flatter chest.

Round (crew) necks are ultimately most suited to slim ladies with long elegant necks (Olivia Palermo we salute you!)

If you still want to keep a round neckline in your wardrobe though, the best style to opt for is a scoop neck. This lower neckline flatters your bust and also shows off just below your collarbone and mid chest- the last area of a woman to age!

The V Neck.
One of my absolute favourites, and should be yours too as it flatters most body shapes!

The degree of ‘V’ that you choose to opt for basically depends on your face shape. If you have a longer face and neck, go for a shallow V, otherwise your features may be drawn out. Alternatively, if you have a rounder shaped face and shorter neck, go for a longer V. This will slim your face and lengthen your neck.

Blake Lively

Good news for big busted women too- a V neck style will slim down your upper body and also flaunt your assets!
The Polo Neck.

The polo neck can be slimming and incredibly chic, but the main thing to remember when wearing a polo neck is to wear a well-fitted bra underneath as the fitted shape of most polo neck tops can be unforgiving!

An oversized polo knit jumper in winter looks amazing, just make sure your bottom half is fitted to balance out the chunky knit on top.

Victoria Beckham

The Wrap Top.

My current favourite, much like the V neck top, a wrap top flatters pretty much all body shapes, drawing the eyes down in a slimming fashion and gathering in at the waist to create a lovely curved shape. Looks amazing in dress form too.

The Tailored Shirt.

The smartest neckline in town, the shirt style makes for an excellent framing device for your face with its collar. The fitted style of a shirt also creates a waist (or the illusion of one), and disguises a tummy. It can also create the illusion of a bust.

For big busted ladies, make sure the buttons don’t pull across your chest, or wear a camisole under a shirt and wear your shirt slightly open as an alternative.

Hopefully you’ve identified a couple of styles for yourself, it’s amazing the difference a lil ol’ neckline can achieve after all!

Shirts To Make You Smile.

A capsule wardrobe- its what we all aspire to own. A carefully compiled collection of all the basics which will cover all of our needs and which will also stand the test of time. The trouble is, what with all the temptation on the high street and trends enticing us in, its quite hard to achieve this! How often have you come home from a shopping trip with something that you probably don’t need, or something which you realistically know you will only wear once? But as emotional shoppers, we women usually find a good enough reason to justify our purchase, much to the bemusement of our functional male shopper counterparts!

Personally speaking, I have fallen into the ‘impulse shop‘ trap many a time, but since training as a stylist, I have learnt to reign in my shopping habits and only part with my money if I know I can team new buys with items already in my wardrobe. In my mind there is a mini ticklish which I have to complete before reaching the till;

  1. Will I wear this more than once?
  2. Can I wear this item in more than one way?
  3. Will this item stand the test of time?

Inspired by my new shopping ways, this week I thought I would do a blogpost on an item which I think is one of the most important parts of a timeless capsule wardrobe…..

The Classic Shirt.

Yes, its the classic shirt! One of the most versatile pieces of clothing you will come across, but also a flattering and chic piece. The shape and fit of a shirt is designed to flatter a women’s shape- the collar frames the face, the shape of a tailored shirt pulls in at the waist and flows out, and a 3/4  sleeve length  can show off the most elegant and thinnest part of your arm.

If you’re looking for an easy piece of clothing to start off your capsule wardrobe, this is it. I’m going to look at three of the easiest and most popular shirt styles to wear.

The White Shirt.

A crisp white shirt teamed with denim jeans could not make for a more classic and timeless combo. This is an effortlessly stylish look and easy to achieve for a smart-casual look. Minimal accessorising is needed and the shirt shape will flatter your assets. Choose whether to go for an oversized ‘boyfriend’ version teamed with slimline jeans, or alternatively a tailored fitted shirt for a smarter look.

The beauty of a white shirt is basically that its a clean palette for you to do whatever you want with! As mentioned previously, you could pair with jeans for a day-time outfit, dress up with a pencil skirt for work, or glam up with a patterned skirt for a sophisticated night out. When shopping for a good white shirt, I would recommend shopping for a good quality one rather than going for a cheap and cheerful version. It is likely to look better, be more comfortable and will also stand the test of time. Remember to wash well, as there’s nothing worse than a white shirt that has turned into a grey miserable one!

Personally, I would choose to wear a white shirt with some skinny jeans, adding a pop of colour with some bright or patterned heels. I would also like to try pairing one with a pretty mid length A-line skirt. See these pics for some inspo…

The Plaid Shirt.

This is the perfect easy-to-wear option to have in your wardrobe. I have had a plaid shirt in my wardrobe since my late teens and find that they are perfect to throw on for a stylish yet comfy piece. If you wanted to dress up your plaid shirt you could team with a skirt, be it a flowing maxi or a fun mini A-line. To complete this playful look, I would knot the shirt up at the hips . Alternatively, why not go oversized and wear over a dress or as a dress. Like the white shirt, there are so many ways to wear this timeless look and you’ll never find it hard to locate them in all different shapes and colours on the high street.

The Denim Shirt.

Saving the best until last, the denim shirt is my all time favourite! For me, its one of the most easily stylish looks you can get and demonstrates the ‘timeless, versatile and easy to wear‘ functions of ‘the shirt‘ perfectly. If you’re feeling brave, denim on denim can look amazing-just make sure the shades of denim you use are slightly different to ensure your outfit has a bit of depth. Same rules apply as with the white shirt- for ultimate chic denim shirt inspiration, see Olivia Palermo who always teams her shirts with timeless neutral classics.

For me, the classic shirt will always have a place in my wardrobe, I just love how easy to wear they are and how I can match them up with so many other items already in my wardrobe.

Jessica Alba Looking fashionable at New York Fashion Week (who would’ve thought?!)

The fashion cycle is turning once again, and a new season of looks has been thrust upon us- yep, its fashion week time. As Autumn creeps up on us and we begin to pack away our summer lightweights and invest in some key winter pieces, our attention is diverted to spring 2014- that’s fashion for you, always something new on the scene!

As New York Fashion Week comes to a close, and London prepares to host its own one, I thought I’d hail a lady who always looks effortlessly amazing and who certainly  didn’t disappoint at the various f-row events and parties in New York- Miss Jessica Alba!

Jessica Alba is always firmly in my top five style icons. I love her ability to look flawless, whether she is shopping in a supermarket with baby in tow, or posing on the red carpet for a Hollywood premiere. She’s a fan of timeless classic pieces but teams these with kooky daring garments-creating a rather versatile wardrobe. Her best fashion trick is to use vivid colours in everyday outfits to give them a bit of Ka-Pow. AND she’s a big fan of yellow just like me. All in all, I would like to be her please!

At New York Fashion Week Jessica wore some key AW trends. At the Charlotte Ronson show, she defied all rules that knee high socks are only for school girls.  With these she wore classic monochrome stripes, a pleated mini skirt and some very on trend deep berry lipstick. This was a fun look made all the better by an artfully draped leather jacket over the shoulders- draping is BIG this winter guys, perfect for your big oversized coats. Not necessarily winter-friendly though! 😛

Continuing her fun streak, Jessica wore a signature Phillip Lim comic book slogan sweater teamed with navy and black tapered  trousers and red stilettos. But she also displayed her versatility as a style icon, going all demure in an asymmetrically cut black dress with white accessories and sleek hair at Narciso Rodriguez. She also returned to stripes in a smart power blazer and quiff up-do at DVF.

Jess wasn’t the only well-dressed celebrity to grace NYFW. Check out these celebrities looking pretty suave. Bonus points to Olivia Palermo for wearing sunglasses on the frow during a show- so fashion darling!

And of course, I couldn’t blog about fashion week without picking some favourite looks for Spring 2014- what were your favourite shows? Can’t wait for LFW!

My Favourite Celebrity Fashion Looks From This Week

In the morning before I go to work, I have a strict regime; get up, get dressed, make breakfast, read the showbiz section of the daily mail…

I get a lot of gratification out of going on the Daily Mail app, not only because I like to spot the awful spelling and grammatical errors on the pieces, and also read the amusing comments that people leave, but mainly to keep up to date with what the celebrities are wearing that week! And I think a lot of you ladies have a similar view towards this website- main procrastinator at work maybe??

This week I have picked three of my favourite looks from the celeb ladies. Yes, I know it’s only Wednesday, but these celebs are on a mission! Although the celebrities wearing them are rich beyond their wildest dreams, I think the looks can easily be copied using high street buys.

Kate Middleton

Of course I couldn’t start with anybody else! Yesterday evening, the nation/world waited on tenterhooks to catch a glimpse of our new royal prince. When Kate and Will emerged with a beautiful little baby in swaddle, you could be forgiven for also equally wowing at Kate and how amazing she looked in her blue polka dot Jenny Packham dress!

Kate has worn Jenny Packham many a time- I thought she looked the definition of princess in her long teal gown which she wore to an Olympic ceremony last year. Kate’s elegant style can be very literal at times- I remember when she wore a maple leaf shaped fascinator by Sylvia Fletcher for her Canada visit and she and Will both wore soft baby blue for the presentation of their newborn.

There is absolutely no doubt that the dress she wore yesterday will have flown off the shelves within minutes. Some people are nutters! Remember though, Kate is also a fan of high street dresses, so keep your eyes peeled for future outfits.

Rachel Bilson

There was a time when I was around the 17 years age mark that I had a small obsession with Rachel Bilson. Watching the OC I used to wish I could have her wardrobe and her (fictional) life. Although her real life is nothing to scoff at! She went slightly off the radar in the UK at least after OC fame, but when I saw this picture of her at the To Do list premiere this week, she skyrocketed back up into my best-dressed list!

The dress in question is a stunning Oscar De La Renta Resort 2014 number. I absolutely love the cobalt colour with the delicate flowers that trickle down the dress. And the cut and shape of the dress is what makes it so unique. The tight skirt with the garment fanning out on her hipline is very pretty. Teamed with simple hair and black accessories including Casadei shoes, I think she looks stunning. Top marks Rachel!

Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo’s style makes me smile. She’s so versatile which is what I strive to be. One day, she will look the picture of elegance in a billowing dress. The next day it’s time to be smart in an impossibly expensive androgynous tailored jacket and sky-scraper heels. And she’s adventurous, never afraid to take a risk either by wearing bold patterns, unusual cuts or mixing and clashing things.

This is precisely what she’s done for her New York outing this week. Where some would achieve the ‘crazy bag lady’ look by mixing and matching, she achieves the ‘Vogue model during a photo shoot’ look. I can see sixties, sport luxe, animal print and graphic prints all in one look, and it looks so so fashionable! The cute sixties mini-dress which she’s teamed with a huge statement necklace, leopard print pumps, an open knitwear netted cardy and of course, a designer handbag in rich red are all key looks from this fashion season.

So I have my looks for this week, now comes the task of finding some high street buys so that I can copy them! I think it may be wishful thinking to stumble across a De La Renta dress in the clearance sale after all….

Summer Fashion Trend Alert! The Skort- Have The Best Of Both Worlds

The Newly Revamped Skort!

The Newly Revamped Skort!

Let’s take a trip down memory lane, or rather fashion lane shall we say. It’s the late 90’s. We all think we look the bomb. Pedal pushers, Adidas shell suits,  bandanas, SCRUNCHIES (?!) and Spice Girl-esque platform shoes are just some of the looks that we loved to don. They made us look so good when we were bopping along to S Club 7. Fast-forward to 2013 and a now 24 year old me, I can  thankfully say that I have the sense to never, never repeat any of these looks ever again! But there is one 90’s trend that has won me over again very surprisingly, and it’s the skort.

The skort is a weird thing, yet so wonderful! Gone are the days where it was seen as a sports garment for women to wear along with a visor for a game of tennis. The skort has been transformed into something seriously fashionable (my 90’s Tammy Girl ones would definitely not fit the bill these days).  Firstly they’re very practical. There’s always a hint of self-consciousness when wearing a short skirt out and about. With a skort you have the appearance of a pretty mini skirt, with the safety of shorts underneath. No knickers on show today!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Skorts are also rather versatile. I had a look on Pinterest for some skort-spiration and found some lovely ladies working the skort into various trends including monochrome, neon and sports luxe. Skorts can be worn smart, casual, at a festival, in the city…anywhere really! So a worthy investment which you should get a lot of wear out of. Plus, you really do get two looks in one- one minute you’re in a skirt, then you need only turn around and you’re in shorts too! Magic.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This season, ZARA had THE skort that every fashionista was after. Coming in a fab asymmetric cut, Its been feautured on countless blogs and worn by celebs including ZARA lover Olivia Palermo, which just goes to prove that it’s a winning garment.

So why not opt for a skort this summer? 2 things for the price of 1 🙂 Yay!

Styling Sequins (NB Not a TOWIE Girl in Sight)

I have bad memories of wearing sequins. When I was younger, I used to attend a ballet school and each year would have to wear a heavily sequined costume for the annual show. Let’s just say sequins on bare skin do not mix harmoniously. Needless to say, I steered clear of them for a while.

But recently, I’ve had a real craving to embrace them once again. After all, they are so pretty! And really are eye-catchers. This could be down to the fact that sequins made an appearance at several SS13 shows. Now, I’m not talking about embracing them like the cast of TOWIE has embraced them with their tiny mini dresses and whatnot! Whilst this ultra glam look works for many a girl, it’s simply not my style.

So I got to browsing the internet for some inspiration and found countless examples of sequins looking very classy indeed. One of my style icons Olivia Palermo (who luckily for her  but not so luckily for us could pull off wearing a bin-liner), looks stunning, classy and incredibly fashionable in an outfit which comprises of  the capsule pieces of jeans and a white shirt along with this sleek silver sequined jacket. Similarly, she proves sequins are no one hit wonder, displaying more of an evening look in sleek and sophisticated black sequins, cinched in at the waist with a chunky belt and completed with a huge leather bag.

And if you’re looking for confirmation that wearing a sequined piece alongside classic pieces really does give you maximum fashion points, then you need only look to Kate Moss, Jessica Alba and Kristen Stewart for confirmation. If sequins came in human form, Kate Moss would snap them all up as best friends. Sequins really do come under the category ‘Statement’ so you need to put them alongside fashionable classics so to allow them their right to (literally and metaphorically) shine.

I also took to Pinterest to track down some inspiring street style where sequins are concerned and fell in love with this green sequin maxi. It looks amazing with this simple white tee and a little colour clashing with a blue clutch and pink heels. Very brave, and this risk definitely works!

I recently made an eBay purchase of a yellow maxi (see my previous blog post ‘yearning for yellow’), and hope to track down a sequined cardigan to team it with. Then I’ll just have to wait for the weather to turn at least bearable so I can wear it… come on weather, do it for us fashionistas!

Spring Trend Alert- Yearning for Yellow

Today something glorious happened- I felt the sun against my face! I think we feared it may never happen again but yes, we experienced the first properly sunny day of the year! And it got me excited about what the new season has in store for my wardrobe.  And I couldn’t be happier that the colour yellow has firmly placed itself on the winner’s podium for no1 colour of the moment!

Yellow has always been my favourite colour, just ask my mum. And it appears it’s not only me that still loves yellow. Louis Vuitton, DKNY, Giambattista Valli to name but a few fashion houses featured it on their SS13 catwalks, Queen Cara Delevingne wore it for her most recent Vogue shoot and a quick perusal of the street style at Milan Fashion Week shows that the city of style was widely embracing the look too.

Of course, wearing yellow can be a tad tricky. Getting the shade right is imperative and it’s all about skin tones etc. You really don’t want to end up looking like big bird or a hyper-active children’s TV presenter too.  But when done correctly, boy does it make you stand out! And its playful tone makes it a bit more fun than always wearing neutrals. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a BIG fan of wearing classic neutral tones, but sometimes teaming them with bursts of colour can really liven up my style.

So whether its lemon, marigold or golden yellow, what’s the best way to go about wearing it?

For daytime style, why not go for some failsafe knitwear and choose a light yellow knit teamed with rolled up jeans and Converse. I would also put a statement necklace over the jumper to really bring out its colour. Light knitwear is perfect for our current climate- getting warmer but not quite there yet.  If you’re really confident with your fashion, then yellow is your new best friend! Why not combine a pair of yellow jeans with a patterned top? You could choose a monochrome checked one perhaps. And for a smarter look, you could opt for a blazer jacket teamed with a classic shirt and jeans ala Millie from MIC.

And despite what the Sugababes said, you will look cooler in a yellow dress. One of my all time favourite dresses was worn by Diane Kruger in 2010. I think this mustard coloured Jason Wu creation is so so so elegant. And remember how beautiful Michelle Williams looked in her Vera Wang Oscars gown?  Sadly, I rarely get an occasion to wear a gown of that magnitude out but Olivia Palermo shows that you can wear yellow dresses in more realistic circumstances and still look utterly amazing.

So although the real sun may not stay out to play for too long this March, get hold of some of your very own sunshine and invest in some yellow pieces! You won’t be disappointed.
