Trainers are many things- sporty, comfortable, active…. but would you ever rush to describe them as ‘fashionable’? With the exception of a few pairs, I would hasten to answer with ‘Hmmm’.  The fashion world is known for subverting the uses of many garments of clothing, but now they’ve taken the trainer shoe for their own, putting a spin on it to make them acceptable to wear with a fashionable outfit when you may not be doing any sport. Outrageous!

More specifically, we are talking about the wedge trainer for fashion-forward ladies. Worn by the likes of Beyonce, Kate Bosworth and Lana Del Rey, you can probably already tell that it’s a versatile look that can work with almost any kind of style. Wedge trainers look particularly amazing with an urban look (see Beyonce looking effortlessly cool as usual), or a rather boho look ( Kate Bosworth wears her trainers with a floaty skirt).

They were also all over the catwalk, contrasting wonderfully with pretty dresses and completing the sport luxe looks that were everywhere. Miss Cara Delevingne perfectly shows us the transistion of fashion trainer from catwalk to real life- I love how she dresses up her trainers with a sleek black suit.

The wedge trainers that everybody wanted on their perfectly pedicured feet were the Isabel Marant versions, but for those that can’t afford that hefty designer price tag, there are high street copies everywhere! I found some great classic black wedge trainers with a tan sole in Topshop, which I may just have to purchase on the weekend! I would wear with my grey maxi dress with slits up the side to show off the trainers, or with simple skinnies and a baggy t-shirt. Infact, I may as well just go buy them right now! Laters!

* Wedge Trainer disclaimer- do NOT wear for actual sport, fashion purposes only! 😛 *

Coachella 2013- Festival Looks To Adapt To Your Own Lifestyle!

Scene 1- sun, music, laughter- basically the time of your life.

Scene 2- work, rain and a soggy sandwich for lunchtime.

Unfortunately for most people, scene 2 is what they’re doing this working week. But it’s a very different story in California, where all the beautiful people are partying hard to the likes of the Stones Roses, Blur and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Waaaa, how depressing! Coachella 2013 is well under way.

Last year one of my first ever blog posts on lottiebeth.com  was about Coachella 2012 and the wonderful boho street style that the festival is famous for. Being in Califorina, It’s the perfect climate for ultimate festival wear. Hot pants to rival all other hotpants, fringed crop tops and flower headbands are practically uniform. As is a banging tan. So to stop myself becoming bitter and twisted with jealousy, I got to looking at some of the celebrity style this year and picked out a few key looks which I think us normal people could work into our everyday lives! Here’s what I found…

1)      Knee High Suede Boots

For look one, we need only look to Diane Kruger for inspiration. She looks amazing in this knee length pair of black boots. No doubt designer and VERY expensive. Knee length boots are not only incredibly sexy and complimentary to your legs, but very practical for walking long distances- whether this is from stage to stage at a festival or walking shop to shop on a serious retail therapy mission. Diane looks festival chic in monochrome patterned shorts and a baggy band t-shirt, but this style of boot also looks brilliant with skinny jeans. When it finally gets warmer here, a floaty summer dress would look ever so pretty teamed with some too. Check out this pair from the new ICONS collection at H&M.

2)      Cats Eyes Sunglasses

Cats Eyes sunglasses skyrocketed from the fifties well into 2013 where celebrities including Katy Perry were seen wearing these delectable accessories at Coachella. They are the perfect way to complete an eclectic look and give off a distinct vintage vibe with their fifties roots. Katy wore hers with a seriously cropped floral top but in the good old UK you could opt for a coloured pair to add a bit of excitement to an everyday outfit. H&M and Topshop are my go-to destinations for cheap but fashionable sunglasses.

3)      Matching Tops and Bottoms

This may sound like something you’d do in primary school, but wearing matching tops and bottoms is pretty big right now! Just look at Coachella veteran Kate Bosworth who looks effortlessly cool in matching frilly floral  designs with scallop edgings. Such a summer look. You can find matching garments in all your favourite high street shops; you just need to have the confidence to buy both at once and then wear them together! Just think, it’s just like wearing a playsuit. And we all love a playsuit!  Throw over a leather jacket or blazer and you can easily go from a daytime activity to a night-time one with this outfit. Perfect.

4)      A Fedora

The fedora is a staple for experienced festival goers. Protection from the sun, a well-needed cover up for greasy festival hair and of course a timeless fashion look. Yes, wearing a fedora in the UK can look a bit try-hard, but on a sunny day in the country or city, teamed with a fashionable outfit it can be the difference between a 9/10 and full marks where an outfit is concerned! Call on your Coachella roots when wearing one and opt for a boho dress and knee high boots.

So whilst I feel sooo  jealous of those pesky Coachella festival goers that I feel I may cry, I’m going to man up and 1) incorporate these looks into my own lifestyle and 2) start furiously saving for Coachella 2014.

Standing Out Whilst Blending In- SS13 Trend Camo

When I think of camo, the following come to mind- my brother’s old action man, 90’s pop stars All Saints and themed uni nights out.  In other words, a little bit novel! But it’s time to rethink this opinion as camo is well and truly on the style radar for this season. Uniform has never looked so good!

For camo inspiration we only need look at DKNY’s huge campaign featuring Cara Delevingne, catwalk shows including Michael Kors, and high street designs from the likes of Zara and Whistles. Camo is the perfect mix of casual and fashionable. And the great thing about this pattern is that is can be worked into any garment- a dress, trousers, jacket….you really can go wild!

As previously said, camo falls hand in hand with casual. This makes it perfect for a fashionable but relaxed daytime look. A pair of skinnies teamed with an army jacket is a classic look- not trying too hard and not scoring any points for bravery, but none the less a great look! Similarly, you could take style inspiration from Queen Beyonce who still looks amazing in her dressed-down camo trousers and military jacket at a a basketball game. I won’t mention the Louboutins she’s wearing as I may get angry with jealousy!

To work camo with other trends this spring, you’re going to have to see red. By that I mean, team it with red, the hottest colour this season! Looking at street style on pinterest I stumbled across this brilliant look of a camo jacket with some bold red shorts. Another big look this season is clashing patterns. Nicola Roberts clashes camo with floral and Rita Ora (who has a snazzy fashion style to say the least) teams it with tiger print and a hot red bag.  I can see the camo trend being huge at festivals this summer, where people will feel more free to pull off edgy adventurous looks with it.

And if you’re more of a ‘dress-up’ girl than a ‘dress down’ one, you could try wearing a camo dress with some ankle boots and a blazer. A fun take on a smart look if you will. Personally I think I’ll be teaming camo with denim shirts, utility jackets and leopard print accessories. When the weather finally pipes up, a maxi skirt with a camo jacket will go down rather nicely too I feel!
